Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity, we united at the City Bird Sanctuary, Sector 21, Chandigarh, to honor our planet’s rich biodiversity and the vibrant world of parrots. The theme for 2025, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” underscores the vital connection between biodiversity and sustainable development, highlighting the need for urgent action to achieve both the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) .
Environmental experts, passionate students from I.S. Dev Samaj School, dedicated teachers from GMSSS Sector 33-D, GMSSS Sector 20-B, and Sector 21, along with enthusiastic members of the public, came together to celebrate and advocate for our natural world.
Mr. Rohan Singh, President of the Environment Society Youth Wing, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in preserving our planet’s natural heritage. Simultaneously, the celebration of World Parrot Day highlighted the need to protect avian species, especially endangered parrots threatened by habitat destruction and illegal trade.
Mr. H.R. Satija, Vice President of The Environment Society of India and a renowned environmental expert, shared insights into the significance of biodiversity and the unique ecological role parrots play. He urged citizens to adopt eco-friendly practices and support conservation initiatives.
The event featured vibrant poster presentations, awareness rallies, and the placement of earthen water bowls to provide drinking water for birds during the summer—a gesture reflecting compassion and care for our feathered friends.
Interactive sessions and informative brochures engaged the public, fostering a deeper understanding of biodiversity and bird conservation.
Mr. N.K. Jhingan, Secretary of The Environment Society of India, reminded us that “Our biodiversity is our life support system.” He highlighted the Society’s pivotal role in the declaration of the Bird Sanctuary by the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife, Government of India, in 1987.
The event was also graced by our chief guest Prof. Keya Dharamveer Ji , Dr. Ravinder Nath (Treasurer), Ms. Rakhi Aggarwal (IT Head), Ms. Anita Mahajan, Ms. Anu Mahajan, Er. Ashok Bansal, Er Rajiv Gupta, Mr BK Garg, Mr Mohinder Taneja, Dr. Anupma Suri, Ms. Sita Kakkar, Yashpal Yadav, Bhuvan and other dedicated members of the Society. Mr. Rohan Singh, President of the Youth Wing of the Society, along with fellow youth members, actively contributed to the success of the event.
