DAY 6 | HIGHER EDUCATION & DISABILITY

Imagine finally getting into the college you dreamed of.

You get your admission.
You buy your books.
You are excited about your first day.

Then you discover…

The classroom is upstairs.
The website isn't accessible.
Study materials aren't available in a format you can use.
Exams don't accommodate your needs.
And asking for support means explaining yourself again and again.

Getting admission is only the beginning.

For students with disabilities, true inclusion also means being able to learn, participate, make friends, access opportunities and belong.

Research and experiences from higher education in India show that barriers can exist in infrastructure, learning materials, digital access, teaching practices, support systems and attitudes.

But solutions are possible:

♿ Accessible campuses
📚 Accessible learning materials
💻 Accessible websites and technology
🤝 Reasonable accommodation and support
👩‍🏫 Better faculty awareness and inclusive teaching
🗣️ Listening to students with disabilities

Because a college admission may give someone a seat in the classroom.

Inclusion makes sure they belong there.

DAY 5 | ENTREPRENEURSHIP & DISABILITY

What if, instead of asking “What job can we give a person with a disability?”, we asked:

“What can they build?”

A business.
A service.
A product.
A team.

The idea may be there.
The skill may be there.
The determination may be there.

But what about finance, training, technology, markets, networks and mentorship?

Research shows that persons with disabilities can face additional barriers when starting and growing a business.

So perhaps the question isn't:

“Why aren't they succeeding?”

Maybe we should ask:

“What is missing around them?”

Entrepreneurship should not become something a person with a disability is forced into because accessible employment is unavailable.

It should be a choice.

A choice to work.
A choice to build.
A choice to lead.
A choice to create opportunities for others.

Because inclusion isn't only about creating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

It's also about creating the conditions for them to create opportunities themselves.

DAY 4 | PUBLIC PLACES & DISABILITY

Imagine having to think twice before going somewhere.

Can I enter? Is there an accessible toilet? Can I get there? Will I need someone to help me?

Sometimes, the uncertainty is enough to make a person cancel their plans.

Accessibility isn't just about ramps.
It's about being able to enter, move, participate and leave independently.

A truly accessible place is one where you don't have to think twice before deciding to go.

DAY 3 | HEALTH INSURANCE & DISABILITY

Imagine needing healthcare not just once, but again and again.

Physiotherapy. Rehabilitation. Specialist care. Assistive devices. Regular follow-ups.

For many persons with disabilities, healthcare is part of everyday life.

Yet 80% of persons with disabilities surveyed by NCPEDP reported having no health insurance.

And even having insurance doesn't always mean the care you need is covered.

The question isn't just, “Are you insured?”
It's “Does your insurance understand your needs?”

Healthcare shouldn't stop at the hospital door.
Insurance shouldn't stop at the fine print.

DAY 2 | POLITICS & DISABILITY

Imagine having a voice — but rarely seeing people like you at the table where decisions are made.

India has 2.68 crore persons with disabilities.
Yet, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, not a single person with a disability occupied one of the 543 seats in Parliament.

The problem isn't that persons with disabilities don't care about politics.

The problem is that politics is still not designed to include them equally.

A person may struggle with:

inaccessible nomination processes

campaign spaces they cannot physically access

lack of sign-language interpretation

additional costs for accessible transport and assistive technology

political parties that rarely see persons with disabilities as candidates or leaders

And sometimes, the biggest barrier is an assumption:

“They need support.”

Instead, we need to ask:

“What if they were the ones making the decisions?”

There are already examples of what representation can look like.

Sadhan Gupta became India's first blind parliamentarian.
Minati Barik became the first female wheelchair user to win an election in Odisha. During her tenure, her village saw significant improvements in hygiene and sanitation.

Representation changes the conversation.

Because when decisions are made with people, rather than simply for them, lived experiences become part of the solution.

So what needs to change?

Make the process accessible.
Make political parties inclusive.
Support people who want to contest.
Collect better data.
Create space for leadership.

Because persons with disabilities shouldn't only be seen as voters, beneficiaries or recipients of welfare.

They can be leaders. Councillors. Panchayat members. MLAs. MPs. Policymakers.

Inclusion means having a place at the table — not just a place in the audience.

🌺 DAY 1 | MENSTRUAL HEALTH & DISABILITY

Something as ordinary as getting your period can become difficult when you have a disability.
-A toilet that isn't accessible.
-Information that isn't easy to understand.
-A menstrual product that isn't easy to use.
-Or simply not having the right support. These may seem like small barriers.

But together, they can affect dignity, independence, education and participation.

Inclusion means making sure every girl and woman has the information, support, facilities and choices she needs to manage menstruation with dignity. Because inclusion isn't always about the big things.
Sometimes, it's about making everyday life a little easier and ensuring nobody is left out.

For the past 6 years, we’ve been ensuring that families of persons with disabilities are part of Vishu celebrations.
This year, we set out to support 101 families.
So far, we have been able to raise support for 36 families,
65 more to go.
