Elsa Primary School, Bodhgaya, India: Supporting Children from Families in Need

After many requests from the local community, Kusala Projects opened Elsa Primary School in April 2010 in Bodhgaya. This small school caters for children who previously had no opportunity to receive an education. For the first five years, the school operated with two teachers and sixty students. Unfortunately, due to

funding issues, the school was down sized to one teacher school with thirty students after March 2015. The school operates entirely from donations from generous people in many countries. The students come from local families who are in various states of need. For example, in some families there may be a parent or sibling who is disabled. In another family with several children, one child may be the only family member to ever have attended school. Kusala Projects, which funds Elsa Primary School, is a secular non-profit body with all members offering their services on a voluntary basis.

Children's Day is observed every year in India on November 14. This date marks the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of India . Nehru is honored for his deep affection for children and his commitment to providing them with quality education. Independence Day is celebrated annually on August 15th in India, marking the nation's liberation from over two centuries of British rule. At Elsa Primary School, the flag-raising ceremony is a cherished tradition where students actively engage in decorating the grounds and setting up the flagpole. As the flag is hoisted, the national anthem, 'Jana Gana Mana,' resonates through the air, followed by performances of traditional Indian dance. After the ceremony, students are treated to an assortment of delicious Indian sweets, adding a festive touch to the day's celebrations.
