Ghonghariya and surrounding villages were ravaged by floods a week ago. The makeshift homes which many local families live in, constructed of bamboo or mud brick were literally washed away, damaging or destroying belongings, animals and food stores in the process. So our teachers were in the community instead of the classroom yesterday, ensuring residents in Ghonghariya get at least one hot meal this week, bringing with them food cooked in Bodhgaya. This was big impact, for as little as 1.60 AUD per meal. With more donations, we can do more.

Since 2023, we’ve been running Ghonghariya Primary School on a shoestring budget — keeping classes going for over 100 children from families living on less than a few dollars a day. Our students pay no fees to attend. The only expectation of parents is to purchase a uniform — and when even that is out of reach, we step in to help. The need has not stopped, and neither have we. But we need your help. Help us raise $5,000 AUD in 4 weeks (roughly 40% of our annual budget) by making a donation - large or small - via this link: https://www.givenow.com.au/schoolgoers

We asked some of our older students what they like most about Ghonghariya Primary School:
Raunan: "Having my own chair." (young students at local government schools are typically seated on the floor, whilst older students share a bench).
Rakesh: "Outdoor play time."
Khushbu: "My teacher."

Happy Indian Independence Day!

For the first time in over two years, we’re asking for your help to grow our school in rural Bihar, India.

At Schoolgoers, children pay no fees to attend. The only expectation of parents is to purchase a uniform — and when even that is out of reach, we step in to help.
Since 2023, we’ve been running Ghonghariya Primary School on a shoestring budget — keeping classes going for over 100 children from families living on less than a few dollars a day. The need has not stopped, and neither have we. But we need your help.

We’re setting ourselves an ambitious target to ensure the school continues to run seamlessly for the year ahead: Raise $5,000 AUD in 4 weeks (roughly 40% of our annual budget)

We welcome donations of all sizes — from the price of a coffee to a classroom sponsorship. One-off or recurring. Everything counts.

As part of this campaign, if you give $500 or more in a single gift we’ll add your name to one of our classroom tables (up to 10 donors) — an ongoing tribute to your generosity.

Having supported over two years of classes for our eager learners, some of our furtniture has been looking a little worse for wear. This week, our coordinator Pankaj has been hard at work to ensure they are returned to their best with a fresh lick of paint.

A lot of our students don’t own a school bag (or indeed any bag) and are forced to carry their books to school.

Following a recent donation, we were able to partner with a local women’s cooperative and order some tote bags for our students. We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our past donors whose contributions have enabled the school’s establishment and supported its ongoing operations.

For those interested, donations can be made via the “donate” buttons found at the top right of our website: schoolgoers.org!

Being able to “tell the time” is a critical skill, and an area we focus on with our students, as their routines are largely not impacted by the clock – for instance, work hours of parents are informed by daylight hours and season/temperature.

To assist with this learning, a few families across Bataspur and Ghonghariya have volunteered to put up our clocks outside their homes, to help students know when to be at class, to better understand the 12 hour clock cycle and see how daylight patterns change depending on the time of year.

A big thank you to our coordinator, Pankaj, who made the arrangements.

As part of our recent lessons, students have been learning about nature and the environment. This included a hands-on “tree planting” activity on the land beside the school. The planting also had a very practical purpose: creating future shade, as local peak summer temperatures regularly reach the 40s.

It recently was Holi, the Festival of Colours, and one of our students’ favourite dates in the calendar. And you can see why: look at all that colour and all those smiles 😄

Happy Holi everyone!

Did you know that all of the water at our school (and indeed the surrounding area) is groundwater, which is accessed via a hand pump? After two years of daily use, our hand pump has been in need of repairs, and thanks to a recent donation from Rosie Nugent we have been able to fix the pump AND install proper drainage. Thanks Rose!

In late 2024, Indian D. Gukesh became the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion. His story is inspiring to our students and since he was crowned we’ve acquired some sets to help our students practice. Could there be a future champion amongst them?

A huge thank you to Kamala Rangarajan and Ethan Barden for their generous support helping us to manufacture a gate for the school, which will help keep the site secured after school hours. The donation was made in memory of Kamala’s aji (grandmother).
