World Leprosy Day 25th January 2026

Compassion in Action in the Land of the Buddha

Please turn your hearts to the hansenians and their supporters on this day. Meditate, donate, dedicate to help relieve these sentient beings from suffering. Even a small donation goes a long way.

Basanti, pictured, has not suffered any stigma because MAITRI’s paramedical workers have been regularly visiting the villagers in her province to explain that leprosy is not a curse from God but a disease caused by a bacterium that can be defeated.

It is over 2500 years since Prince Siddhartha sat beneath the Bodhi tree here in Bodhgaya and turned his mind to the altruistic thought to free all beings from suffering. Despite great advances in technology still people are living with leprosy and the Buddha’s message of compassion remains relevant.

World Leprosy Day is one of the occasions taken up by MAITRI to spread awareness and raise funds for the eradication of the stigma attached to the disease and the bestowing of material and moral relief to the hansenians.

At 83 years old, Adriana continues a lifetime of completely selfless service to the poorest, most vulnerable and neglected people and animals in Bihar—carried out within an especially harsh and challenging environment.

Happy Lhabab Duchen! This is one of the four great holy days on the Buddhist calendar. It celebrates Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s return to Earth from the God Realm of the Thirty-Three after teaching Dharma for several months to the gods. As a merit multiplying day, the karmic results of actions done on this day are multiplied 100 million times.

World Leprosy Day, 29th Jan.
This is a day where we can raise awareness about this treatable and manageable disease. In December 2021 this mother arrived at MAITRI, rejected by her husband due to the social stigma. Her body was disfigured by severe type 2 leprosy reaction. After 5 months of intensive treatment at MAITRI her reaction subsided, her appearance recovered and she could be released from our hospital with the confidence that her life could continue as before.

Merry Christmas from Bodhgaya!
This photo of a partial solar eclipse at the Mahabodhi Stupa in October is a reminder of the interconnectedness of things. Our work to help the disadvantaged depends on the kindness and support of others. Christmas is a time where we remember the importance of generosity and sacrifice with the motivation of helping others, particularly the needy.
