The Kulsi River in Assam, India, is a vital habitat for the endangered Gangetic river dolphins (Platanista gangetica). These dolphins depend on the river's deep, fast-flowing waters for navigation and hunting. However, threats like illegal sand mining, artificial dams and pollution from many sources endanger their habitat. Conservation efforts are focused on stricter regulations and raising community awareness to protect these unique creatures. The presence of the Gangetic river dolphins in the Kulsi River highlights its ecological importance and the urgent need for sustainable conservation practices to ensure their survival.

Mr. Rajesh Dutta, Mr. Prasanna Kalita, and many nature enthusiasts are actively working to save the dolphins in the Kulsi River. They are preparing an awareness video to educate society about these dolphins and their habitat. We urge that the Kulsi River and its dolphins be saved soon and propose declaring the Kulsi River a Dolphin Sanctuary, similar to the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in Bihar. This will help protect these endangered creatures and preserve their habitat for future generations.

A significant number of elephants are being poached for their meat within Behali Reserve Forest. Despite the initial notification as WIldlife Sanctuary, nothing has changed. The langurs are gone, now the elephants. It is found that this illegal practice is driven by demand for elephant meat in local markets. There is an urgent need for stronger conservation efforts to protect the remaining elephant population in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and to curb the illegal trade in elephant meat.

Bortukula Saboloi Jao aha 2.0: A youth initiative to save the lesser adjutant storks of Assam

Sunday, 25th September: A unique and wonderful program by the name "Bortukula Saboloi Jao Aha 2.0" was held in Biswanath Chariali. Commonly known as Bortukula, the Lesser Adjutant Stork, a threatened bird species is facing extinction day by day remaining un-noticed to the common eyes. Few of these birds have chosen Biswanath city as their home, nesting in the trees of selected households. And these birds have been monitored since 2015 by Wild Heart Foundation, a society formed by young students and researchers of Biswanath. They have been studying them, involving themselves in rescue and rehabilitation, spreading awareness and making Biswanath an ideal example in the field of conservation. The program was attended by Vignesh (DFO Sonitpur East Division), Das (DFO Social Forestry Division, Biswanath), Amorjyoti Borthakur (Chairman, Biswanath Municipality) and Chinta Moni Sharma (Principal, Biswanath College). With a valuable talk delivered on storks, their importance threats and issues, a documentary was also screened followed by Nest adoption programme. This was done to ensure long term protection of the species in the city. The people who has kept these storks in the trees within their boundaries were felicitated, along with the Press club members for their continued support in such green actions. More than 100 people attended the program. We hope the young generation will be concerned about their surrounding biodiversity and take step towards co-existing with them.

We sincerely acknowledge and highly appreciate the work Dr. Anwaruddin Choudhury has done for Assam and our Behali Reserve Forest. There are only a handful of people just like him. Apart from his articles on birds, primates and protected landscapes, yesterday we found this. Baffled and thankful we are, here sharing it for you.

Assam is home to the second largest population of Asian Elephants in the World. Worshipped as gods (Lord Ganesha), they are treated mercilessly and killed brutally throughout its range. And so they are vanishing fast with more than 50 deaths each year in the state alone. This is a wonderful documentary by EastMojo, which depicts the story of Man-elephant (the hot topic, on which every Indian must get their eyes on). I sincerely appreciate the filmmakers for this wonderful film. Though it doesn't shows a complete story, but it is the beginning.

Assam is one state in India that has a third of its area covered in forests, or so claims the state's forest department. Why, then, do we see elephants ventu...
