South Bengal Institute for community studies is a community support organization based in West Bengal. It was registered under West Bengal Registration Act 1961 with it’s headquarter at Bishnupur, Bankura. South Bengal Institute for Community Studies in short SBICS is endeavouring to address to the needs of community in a holistic manner. SBICS believe that the solution lies in empowerment of comm
unity. The divide between the world’s rich and poor is the result of closed hearts and narrow minds. Number of poor has always overshadowed the number of milliners. Poverty which is the root cause of all evils is multidimensional in nature. Therefore there can not be any single solution for it’s reduction. Poverty reduction can only be achieved through a broad spectrum of activities bolstering universal human rights, fostering economic growth and social development, enhancing national and local capacity and empowering the poor to join as central partners in their own development. These actions fit neither simple framework nor single blueprint. With this challenge in the backdrop, in the year 2000, the Institute was established. However to concretize its commitment formal registration process was completed in the year 2006. There is a large number of Government projects and non-governmental and voluntary organizations working for the betterment of lives. But they have failed to present a scientific approach towards community development. Lack of proper healthcare or widespread poverty in the society is not because of the resources but an acute lack of access to and control over resources. In almost all setups community has failed to have it’s control over the resources. SBICS’s focus is to develop self sustaining institution of the marginalized for the sake of their own development.
