The days leading upto the final day of the workshop were filled with great energy and determination. Each group owned their products, incorporated feedbacks and strived hard to make it functionable. The end result was an amazing feat where waste wood was turned into a good quality usable furniture. After an insightful review session, the students found genuine satisfaction when their furniture was being used joyfully by our dearest little friend, Swati.

A lot has always been happening at Karigarshala behind the scenes: things built, explored, and archived, but not always shared. This time, we want to change that. We want people to be part of it, to see it, and to grow with us.

We extend our gratitude to Studio Dot for their support in designing our website.

Studio Anugraha for the brand identity and banner illustrations, Empirici designs for their contribution towards infographics. Special Thank you to our KST team members Rajesh Vora for the incredible photographs and for guiding the website team along with Savia Mahajan.

Karigar Shala, March 2026 • KSD, Rajkot

At Karigar Shala, learning begins with understanding the material first before working on it. For this workshop, a small presentation supplemented by exhibits showed how wood is sourced at its origin, it's morphology, it's defects and why regular seasoning of wood is important. Having worked on one product, the students were challenged with a task bigger in scale this time: a kindergarten furniture to be used by children. The topic aligned with their ongoing design project back in college and thus gave them an opportunity to move beyond drawings and test their design ideas in reality.

Karigar Shala, March 2026 • KSD, Rajkot

The collaboration between the design students and artisans paved the stage for an exchange of ideas and skills: the designers became makers and makers turned into designers. When the learning happened both ways, the output was a display of some interesting products that were thoughtful and practical.

March 2026

It was delightful to have first year B.Des (Interior) students from KSD for a week long woodworking programme. At Karigar Shala, in line with the core belief: 'learning by making', the first session had them get introduced to the maker's world. From different types of wood, joineries to hand tools and machines- all the 'characters of the workshop' were revealed by the team one by one. Eventually as the students understood few tools first hand by using it, the story began as they geared up for an exciting project: the design and making of a tableware product. The students were divided into 6 groups of 5 each along with in-house artisans being active part of the brainstorming. The day ended with a design discussion where all groups confidently put forth their ideas and received many perspectives- some that prompted them to rethink their ideas and tweak the designs.

STOOL BENCH
This stackable stool, crafted by the students of Karigarshala, is designed to come together to form a bench: simple in structure, intuitive in use, and playful in spirit.

The design draws inspiration from the AA Stool by Ishinomaki Laboratory, and was thoughtfully developed by our students, further evolving through the process of making as part of their hands-on learning.

As a part of their learning, students are executing objects which are available for your purchase and each purchase contributes directly to supporting the continued education and training of the students who create them.

Your purchase will encourage their learning and artisanship!

Earth Construction Workshop - Part 2

Adobe Blocks

After understanding soil and its properties, the next step was turning that knowledge into something tangible. Students moved into mix design, learning how wet sieve analysis informs material proportions, and applied this learning hands-on by making their own sun-dried adobe blocks.
From pugging clay (with a lot of dancing) to shaping unstabilised adobe bricks, the process was energetic, immersive, and deeply engaging—exactly how learning at Karigarshala is meant to be.

Soil Learning with M.Arch Sustainability students from Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune

With a lot brewing at Karigarshala, we’re excited to share moments from our Earth Building Technology workshop, where students of Bharti Vidyapeeth’s Master’s in Sustainable Architecture programme spent two days learning by getting their hands “dirty” (quite literally).

“To be original, one must go back to the origin,” said Antoni Gaudí and that’s exactly where the workshop began: soil, the starting point of earth construction.

From curious questions to close-up observations of the smallest details, these two days were about understanding material before designing with it. A strong start, setting the pace for many more hands-on, curiosity-driven experiences at Karigarshala.

At our Bhuj campus, we are trying to facilitate learning that goes deeper and contextualize it with the present.
