NIRMAN launches a new program in the Kandhamal district of Odisha. It is named SEEDLING (Supporting Earth & Environment through Development, Learning, Innovation, Nurture & Growth) and is supported by Terre Des Hommes (TDH), Germany.

At the micro level, the project improves environmental education and climate awareness among children and youth, and supports them to see themselves as important actors in responding to climate change. The project also helps communities adopt climate-smart and sustainable practices and works with local authorities to include climate priorities in village and district planning and governance processes leading to carbon sequestration and lower CO2 emissions.

In the orientation session the Executive Director explained the overall aim of the TDH SEEDLING Project. The TDH Programme Officer facilitated a detailed session on the project framework, covering the project goals, expected outcomes, indicators, and major activities. NIRMAN staff who are facilitating community seed banks are attending the three days "Establishing and Strengthening Sustainable community Seed Banks" workshop at ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar. The participants were asked to discuss the following and present as a part of group exercise;

1. What change have occurred in crop diversity within your community over the past twenty years?
2. Which traditional crop varieties have disappeared, and why?
3. How do farmers currently access seeds for different crops?
4. Which existing community institutions could support a community seed bank? Or are new structures needed?
5. What role do women, youth and experienced seed custodians play in local seed conservation?

Reflection Questions;
1. What are the different kinds of approaches that you may use for mobilising community to form Community Seed Bank (CSB)?
2. What are the tools/ methods that you have been using in CSB formation?
3. Which partnerships would strengthen your CSB over the next five years?

A team from "Common Ground" visited Daspalla Block to understand community-led forest governance, forest-based livelihoods, and community development initiatives. The team visited Uparadikiri Village and interacted with community members regarding forest-based livelihoods, livelihood enhancement, forest protection and conservation, and the changes observed in forest resources through sustained community efforts.

The discussion focused on the role of the Gram Sabha in Community Forest Resource (CFR) management, including the preparation and implementation of CFR Management Plans and linking community priorities with the action plans of government departments. Community members shared their experiences of forest conservation, livelihood development, participation in government schemes, and collective decision-making.

Following the village visit, the team participated in a MAP meeting at Daspalla with Gram Sabha Samuha leaders, Gram Sabha representatives, SHG members, and government department representatives. The discussion focused on the organizational structure and functioning of MAP, its membership, regular meetings, activities, and its role in identifying and addressing common community issues through collective action and coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Overall the visit provided valuable insights into community-led forest management, livelihood development, institutional strengthening, and the role of collective platforms such as MAP in addressing community issues and promoting coordinated action.

NIRMAN in collaboration with the University of Waterloo, Canada, and IIT Kharagpur has conducted a workshop "Community Perspectives on Chilika as a Place of Co-learning and Co-creation." Students from 4 countries (Tanzania, Canada, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh) listened to communities from villages surrounding Chilika.

The students were very impressed not only with the experiences narrated but also the knowledge of the community members gained from them. They conceded, "Most of us had spent years inside classrooms. We had read, attended lectures, prepared assignments, and slowly come to believe that knowledge lives inside books." Overall a very productive exercise.

Thirty five students of the University of Waterloo, Canada and IIT Kharagpur have visited Bankataila village in the Daspalla Block of Nayagarh district. They were led by Prof Dr Prateep Kumar Nayak, and Dr Sisir Kanta Pradhan and accompanied by Mr Prasant Mohanty, Executive Director, NIRMAN.

They interacted with the community members regarding the functioning of the Gram Sabha and its role in providing livelihoods through community forest resource management. They were interested to know about the involvement of women and youth in protecting the forests, the practice of thengapali, and fighting forest fires. The women narrated how they helped the animals and birds of the forests by arranging water sources during summer times.

The students shared how they felt that the community was united through its efforts to protect and conserve the forests and its inhabitants. The students came from diverse countries like Tanjania, Canada, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. They narrated how they were enriched by the exposure visit and their interaction with the community.
