Empowering Rural Communities through Sustainable Practices

As part of its commitment to foster sustainable livelihoods and green entrepreneurship, Development & Environment Futures Trust (DEFT), in collaboration with IIT Bhubaneswar supported by the MacArthur Foundation, organized a Three-Day Training & Capacity Building Workshop on Vermicomposting from 4th–6th October 2025 at Langaleswar, Odisha, under the Green Tourism Corridor (GTC) Project.

The workshop brought together Krushi Mitras and Women SHG representatives from seven Gram Panchayats, engaging them in a comprehensive learning experience combining interactive sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and an exposure visit to a live vermicomposting unit at RPRC, Bhubaneswar.

Led by professors, , and field practitioners, the training focused on transforming organic waste into a source of income, emphasizing waste-to-wealth innovation, green entrepreneurship, and climate-resilient livelihood practices.

This initiative forms a key component of DEFT’s larger mission under the Green Tourism Corridor, connecting communities from Mangalajodi to Rambha along the Chilika Lake, to build an ecosystem of environmentally responsible and economically empowered rural enterprises.

At DEFT, we believe that sustainability begins at the grassroots by equipping communities with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to shape their own green futures.
