Bakul Foundation It's an attempt to pool together the small individual energies of all the people interested in the social development of India starting in Odisha.

We are an ever growing group of people like you,who believe that real change can happen when we become the change we want in the world. We believe if we all come together with our small energies and little contributions,we can bring about the change we want in underdeveloped, poverty, injustice and environmental destruction around us. We are the students, retired persons, home makers,working professionals and we are spread out all across the world. Every day more people join our movement.

The British Deputy High Commissioner to India, Mr Andrew Fleming was at the Bakul Library today, where he interacted with 10 of our Gen Z Volunteers in an attempt to get a sense of their pulse.

There was a wonderful discussion on what each of the Gen Z wanted for themselves and for society in the years to come.

🌳🐘 TREE GANESH: WHERE GANESHA BECOMES A TREE

For the 7th year, Bakul Foundation celebrated Ganesh Puja by worshipping a living tree as Shri Ganesh. 🌿

A mature tree at Biju Patnaik Park was transformed into Ganeshji using reused and eco-friendly materials—kulla as ears, reused thermocol as tusks, sunboard as eyes, and a painted coconut as the cutest Mushika! 🐭🥥

And this year, Ganeshji wore a pink dhoti and turban, playfully breaking gender stereotypes. 💗

But the most beautiful part? There is no idol to immerse.
The rains gradually washed away the artwork, giving Ganeshji a natural visarjan—without adding PoP, chemical paints and other idol waste to our water bodies. 🌧️

And this matters.

The Odisha State Pollution Control Board’s 2024 study on Ganesh idol immersion recorded BOD levels of 95 mg/L after immersion, against a permissible limit of 3 mg/L—about 32 times higher.

The same OSPCB report cited Bakul’s Tree Ganesh as an example of an eco-friendly celebration in Bhubaneswar. 🌱

For us, Tree Ganesh is not about celebrating less.
It is about celebrating differently.

Because planting trees is not enough.
We need to love them.
We need to build a cultural relationship with them.
And perhaps, one day, worship them. 🌳❤️

It was gratifying to listen to the words of appreciation for the volunteers of Bakul from Dr. Lobsang Sangay, Former President of the Govt of Tibet and Professor at Harvard Law School.

We did very little but this support has warmed the hearts of Tibetans in exile, and we are happy being the “happy warriors” as Dr Sangay called us.

Anyone following the devastating Nepal Floods would have come across references to ICIMOD or the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, which is the most important institution studying the Hindu Kush Himalayas as one interconnected climate–water–ecosystem–human system cutting across borders.

Dr. Arabinda Mishra, Chairperson, DEFT has been in leadership roles in ICIMOD since 2015 and he is a former Professor and Director, Earth Sciences and Climate Change at TERI University.

Dr Mishra, who has studied the region, will be speaking on the cause of the devastating Nepal Floods and why it matters to us in Odisha as well, next
