“Hindu Purohit Sangh” was registered as a society under Society Registration Act, 1860, by a group of people concerned with the of plight of Hindu priests, unity in Hindu Society and changing needs of Society as a whole. Priests, known by various terms like Purohit, Archak, Pujari, Ojha, Bhagat, Pandit, Baman,Panda and so on are the principal custodians of Hindu traditions; therefore, their role is vital for keeping the traditions alive, spreading the philosophy and making it easily accessible to all. Hinduism is now a global phenomenon and at the same time there is increased curiosity about this religion .To satisfy this new found curiosity is a challenge before Hindu priests and religious leaders. The priests perform functions for legitimisation of social relations which binds people in a social fabric. They also fulfil religious and spiritual needs of society. Despite such crucial role Hindu society has not been able to give the priests the space they deserve. As a result best brain is not getting attracted to this profession. Present day society expects that priest perform multitude of roles and then are well qualified. Further, the scope of priestly functions has broadened to new areas because of the changes in society. The main expectations from Hindu priest today are as followed:-
1. Rituals and Sacraments: - They are expected to be well versed in the traditions of various schools, deities, rituals performed at home and temples .They have command over the rite- de- passes from pre- birth stage to post-death and also Karmakand like Havan, Yagna, Vrata, and those pertaining to festivals. They should be good speakers and have command over Katha and Vyakhyaan like Satya Narayan Katha, Bhagavad Gita, Ram Charita Manas, Durga Saptasati and other recitals and Bhajans . Deliver lectures during mourning and condolences. They should have knowledge of Yama, and Niyama and so on.
2. Spiritual, Moral and Religious Education :- Religious education to children is no more being provided by modern schools and there is a vacuum . This role is also falling on the shoulders of priests. To teach children, in their own language and level is a challenge. Another role is to work as advocate of Hindu religion in which priests go to schools, temples, churches , inter-religious debates, and other institutions to put forward the Hindu viewpoint which is also appreciated by audience. Advice and Counselling and Clarifications: - Function as Guru and bring more people back to active religious fold. Hindu public is keen so far as the performance of Sanskars is concerned, but similar attitude is required towards necessary rituals.
3. Increase religiosity among and commitment to faith. They are also expected to clarify the stand of Hindu religion on various social issues. In addition, knowledge of astrology, Yoga and meditation is appreciated. They should have exposure to art of speaking and should have basic knowledge of other major religions of the world. Ability to articulate in English and in one of the Indian Languages (Hindi, Marathi, Assames, Tamil, Telgu, Punjabi etc.) In the changing social patterns, where there is lot of migration of people from place to place, to provide the information on availability of priests in the area is important. The Website of Hindu Purohit Sangh namely www.hindupurohitsangh.in is an attempt to provide a platform to the people on these needs. The other objectives are underlined as follows:-
1. Establish communication between priests in different cities and countries, so that vacancies of priests are filled up as per demand and unemployed is reduced.
2. To transform scattered system of Hindu priesthood into an institutionalised set up and enable the priests to become the advocates of Hinduism.
3. Make Sanatani and Arya Samaji Purohits members of the Hindu Purohit Sangh and keep the Sangh membership open for Buddhists monks, Jain Munis and Sikh Granthis.
4. Categorise the Purohits based on their qualifications, experiences and specialisation.
5. To work for cultural, social and economic interests of Purohits and Hindu society .Help in making the priestly profession a sufficient source of livelihood and make efforts to bring women and non-traditional castes including Dalit into this profession.
6. To establish chain of priests of different ranks under religious leaders like Sankaracharyas.
7. Establish branches of Sangh in different parts of the India and in different countries. And connect with institutions helpful in realisation of these goals.
8. Establish training institutions for the priests with the financial help from Hindu society. Similarly, motivate the society to support the priests for their worldly needs and ensure that the priests have comfortable life. It should also be ensured that society insists on the virtues associated with the priestly profession like purity, cleanliness, compassion, kindness and character. It is utmost important that the priestly professions remain reverenced one. Hindu society should donate liberally so that quality institutions are established to upgrade knowledge base of priests and help the people dedicated for achieving this mission.
