Empowering Change with Aarushi Pandey

Meet Ms. Aarushi Pandey, an inspiring changemaker and Banyan Impact Fellow, working with Indian Grameen Services! Selected from a highly competitive pool, Aarushi joins the American India Foundation (AIF) as a Banyan Impact Fellow, alongside 23 other talented fellows from India and the US. As part of this 10-month program, she will contribute the vision of Indian Grameen Services through her project. At the same time, Aarushi will get an opportunity to learn many aspects of the Organisation.

Aarushi’s journey began with Abhilasha NGO, a non-profit she started in 2020, inspired by her mother, to uplift women and children in Bhopal. With a background in social work and experience across educational programs, urban development research, and speaking engagements on platforms like Greenpeace India, Aarushi brings valuable expertise to her Fellowship role.

The AIF Banyan Impact Fellowship

The AIF Banyan Impact Fellowship is a unique US-India service program that equips young professionals like Aarushi with hands-on experience in social change. Through immersive projects that span crucial areas like public health, gender, livelihoods, and climate justice, the program cultivates future leaders who are passionate about sustainable impact. Since 2001, the Fellowship has supported over 570 fellows and 255 partner organizations, creating a legacy of collaboration and community-driven transformation.

Photos from our first distribution drive and interaction with children at one of the centres near Sundar Nursery.

With the help of our fundraising volunteers, we distributed stationary items to these children and spent some time doing various activities.

It is important to us that we contribute to anything that encourages little children to come to schools/education centres accessible to them and study. This drive is an extension to the initiation of our education centre in Bhopal which we are aiming to expand further in the coming months.

The team Abhilasha went to Anna Nagar slums after the fire accident to distribute essentials that will help the people of Anna Nagar rebuild their households again. We asked for funds, and through your help, we could collect sufficient funds to buy new utensils, mattresses, blankets, and clothes. We are grateful to everyone who trusted us and contributed to this initiative. For everyone who was a part of this, through Abhilasha, you helped those who needed it more than anything else. Our mission is to be an organization ready to help people around us. We are here to help, and since everyone who contributed to this initiative is part of this help, we are a big team here. Thank you, and let us always be ready to show up whenever and wherever we can to help.

We would like to especially thank for funding us for the rations. Through them, organizations like us feel empowered to do our work with honesty and dedication. They started their initiative to curb the issue of hunger and we wish them the very best for their initiative.

अन्नानगर की झुग्गियों में आग त्रासदी

अन्नानगर, गोविंदपुरा भोपाल की झुग्गियों में रखे सिलेंडर से गैस रिसाव के चलते वहाँ आग लग गई और कुछ ही समय में पूरा इलाका शोक में डूब गया । आग पड़ोस के झुग्गियों में भी फैल गई । हमारे वहाँ पहुंचने के समय तत्कालीन स्तिथि शुरुआत में बताए गए विवरण से ज्यादा भयावह थी । आग के चलते बर्तनों में भी कुछ नही बचा , सौभाग्यवश घटना के समय कोई व्यक्ति घरों के अंदर मौजूद नहीं था इसलिए जान का कोई नुकसान नहीं हुआ । पोस्ट की गई फोटो से इस विभीषिका का अंदाज़ा आसानी से लगाया जा सकता है । हम आग में पूरी तरह जल गए तीन घरों के लिए राहत पैकेज तैयार कर रहे हैं । हमारा आप सभी से विनम्र निवेदन है कि, कृपया इस मुहीम में यथासंभव तरीके से अपना योगदान दें । हम कपड़े, बर्तन, कंबल , चप्पल आदि सामग्रियां इक्कठा कर रहे हैं। अन्य आवश्यक घरेलू सामग्रियों हेतु हम वित्तीय मदद भी स्वीकार कर रहे हैं ।

पूरी तरह जल गए घरों में रहने वाले लोगों का विवरण ( ताकि सही नाप के कपड़े एवं चप्पल आदि दान किए जा सकें ) कुछ इस प्रकार हैं -:
3 वयस्क महिलाएं ( उम्र 30 - 40 वर्ष)
4 वयस्क पुरुष ( उम्र 30-45 वर्ष)
1 छोटी लड़की जिसकी उम्र 8 वर्ष है ।
1 नवजात शिशु 1.5 वर्ष का ।

आप अंतिम स्लाइड में दिए गए स्कैनर से फोन पे या गूगल पे (phonepe OR gpay) द्वारा वित्तीय मदद कर सकते हैं (कोई भी धनराशि महत्वपूर्ण हैं क्योंकी हम नए सिरे से जीवन का निर्माण करने का प्रयास कर रहें हैं जिसके लिए हमें आपकी मदद की आवश्यकता है )

Anna Nagar Slums Fire Accident

A fire broke out due to gas leaking from a cylinder kept in a slum in Anna Nagar, Govindpura, Bhopal. Within no time, the slum was utterly gutted. The fire also spread to some nearby slums. When we visited the slum, we discovered that the situation was way more critical than was initially reported. Not even a single piece of utensil survived. Fortunately, at the time of the accident, there was no person inside the slums, so there were no human casualties. The pictures in the post will give you a glimpse of the condition of the slums. We are creating a care package for the three houses that were completely destroyed in the accident. It is our humble request from everyone, please contribute to our initiative in whichever capacity you can. We are collecting clothes, utensils, blankets, footwear, sheets, mattresses, etc. We are also accepting monetary contributions for buying essential furniture for households.

Details of people living in houses that are completely destroyed (for donating the correct sizes of clothes and footwear):

3 Adult women (age group of 30-40)
4 Adult men (age group 30-45)
1 girl aged 8
1 boy aged 1.5

You can phonepe or gpay monetary donations to the scanner posted in the last slide (any amount is significant, we are building a life out of scratch for these people, and we need your support)

We are so glad to have with us for this initiative. They are donating ration which we will be distributing to the households of Anna Nagar.

CrayonForCubs were kind enough to send us Rakhi-Janmashtami gift wrappers for our little kids. These gift wrappers brought immense joy to our kids’ faces. The excitement of the festival was doubled when they heard they would be getting a surprise. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to CrayonForCubs for making the day extremely special for the kids and for us at Abhilasha.

Risãlã, is a magazine focused on Urdu Literature and Language by Dakhni. The month of May includes the theme of labour along with other important themes.

The upcoming online edition of the magazine features Abhilasha's work along with celebrating other communities.

The magazine is divided into four vivid sections like Aks e Hina, Bazeecha e Atfal and Andaaz e Bayãn to cover different spectrums of language and art.

These are children from Awadhpuri, Bhopal. For a long time, they’ve spent their days working at a construction site in the city.

During one of our distribution drives, we posed a question. Perhaps, you are wondering about the same question.

How many of them are going to school?

We found out that though they’re enrolled in a school back in their village, they don’t attend classes. This struck a chord with our inspiration, Abhilasha Ji. She came up with the idea of setting up an education centre for these kids a few weeks ago.
We utilised the funds collected by our NGO’s Artists’ Week and organised the space. Now Abhilasha Ji, with the help of her daughter, Aarushi (our founder & president), teaches kids every day at the Awadhpuri centre.

Abhilasha Ji’s dedication to educating children and your collective help and support have made this education centre possible. We also distributed school books, stationery and masks to the children, who joyfully arrive at the centre every day with an ear-to-ear grin.

IMPORTANT: Our Awadhpuri centre in Bhopal is looking for volunteers to teach twice or thrice a week. Such contributions will help the education centre grow and help us expand to other locations in the future. Those who are interested, kindly DM us.

Let us welcome these beautiful young faces to our newly set-up education centre. Please continue to support us as we work towards setting up more centres to make education more accessible for the children in Bhopal.

The question of public literacy passes all our minds. And yet, most of us can’t do much to help. The mere fact that we can read this sentence indicates our privilege. Most of us went to big schools, learned more than one language, and were taught ways to be independent in this society. We, at Abhilasha, believe this “privilege” should be accessible to everyone.

So when you take a look at the above statistics, remember that for every new student enrolled, there is at least one student who has to discontinue their education due to their circumstances.
