AVANI is a voluntary organization working in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, located in the Central Himalayans. It is focused on creating livelihoods for the people of this area while conserving natural resources and working towards gender equality. AVANI revived the traditional skills of Natural dyeing, Hand spinning and Hand weaving in 1999 as a source of income for rural families.

Yesterday, our Avani centres in Tripuradevi, Sukna, Digoli, and Thangka came together to celebrate National Handloom Day, reflecting on the enduring legacy of handloom and the communities that sustain it.

Celebrated every year on August 7th, National Handloom Day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905. The movement that reaffirmed the strength of India’s indigenous crafts and the spirit of self-reliance.

At Avani, that spirit continues to live on. Every handwoven textile represents more than exceptional craftsmanship, it represents sustainable livelihoods and women’s economic empowerment.

On National Handloom Day, and every day, we celebrate the hands that weave not only fabric, but identity, resilience, and hope.

The inauguration of the AVANI’s Resource Centre at Haldwani, supported by the Eicher Group Foundation and WHH / European Union, marks the beginning of a new space for learning, sharing, and collaboration. We were honored to welcome Prof. (Dr.) Alka Goel, Dean, College of Home Science, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, as the Chief Guest.

The event also sparked meaningful discussions on future collaborations and expanding the reach of sustainable textiles to global markets.
From a demonstration natural dye garden to hands-on displays of natural dyeing and handloom weaving, the Resource Centre showcases AVANI's work and commitment to sustainable crafts.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to welcoming students, artisans, institutions, and everyone interested in natural dyes and sustainable textiles.
