🌿🏆 A Proud Moment for Youth for Social Development!

We are delighted and honoured to share that Bibhu Prasad Sahu , Founder & CEO, Youth for Social Development (YSD), was felicitated by KIIT - Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology at the 7th National Rural Management Conclave 2026. 🎓🤝

✨ He was recognised among 20 eminent grassroots civil society leaders of Odisha for his contribution to grassroots development and community engagement.

This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects a long-standing relationship between KIIT and Youth for Social Development. Over the years, YSD has been working closely with KIIT to provide students with opportunities for internships, field exposure and experiential learning in real community settings. 🌱🏘️

For us, an internship is much more than a short-term placement. It is an opportunity for young people to step outside the classroom, interact with communities, understand real-life challenges and connect academic knowledge with grassroots realities. 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓🌍

At the same time, the energy, curiosity and fresh perspectives of young students have enriched YSD’s own learning and community work.

💬 We strongly believe that development education becomes more meaningful when classrooms connect with communities, and knowledge is transformed into action.

🙏 Our heartfelt gratitude to KIIT and the organisers of the 7th National Rural Management Conclave for this recognition and for nurturing a platform that brings together academia, young professionals and grassroots practitioners.

🌊 Our Coast, Our Responsibility! 🌱🐢

A clean beach is not only about a beautiful coastline. It is about protecting our marine life, our natural environment and the communities whose lives and livelihoods are connected to the sea.

Youth for Social Development (YSD), organised a Beach Clean-up Drive and “Safe Coast, Protected Coast” Signature Campaign at Podampet Beach, Ganjam, under the "Raising Tides, Rising Youths: Strengthening Coastal Communities in Ganjam" project.

💪 The activity brought together 124 young people, children, community members and village leaders, including 52 youth, who came together to take action for a cleaner and safer coast.

🧹 Together, participants collected 500+ pieces of waste, including plastic bottles, polythene, packaging materials, gutka/jarda sachets, bottle caps, glass bottles and other non-biodegradable waste. The collected waste was then segregated and responsibly disposed of.

🐢 Why does this matter?

The Ganjam coast is also an important habitat associated with Olive Ridley turtle conservation and nesting. Protecting our beaches from plastic and other waste means protecting the natural habitats and marine biodiversity that depend on them.

✍️ Through the “Safe Coast, Protected Coast” Signature Campaign, youth and community members also pledged to:

♻️ Reduce single-use plastics
🗑️ Avoid littering and dispose of waste responsibly
🌱 Practise waste segregation
🐢 Protect marine and coastal biodiversity
🤝 Take collective responsibility for our coastline

A clean beach should not depend only on occasional clean-up drives. Real change begins with reducing waste at source, changing everyday practices and building community ownership.

For YSD, this is what youth-led climate action and community-led resilience look like—young people and communities coming together, taking responsibility and creating change where they live.

From Podampeta to Aryapalli: Ganjam’s Coast Is Sending Us a Warning ⚠️

A decade ago, Podampeta became a symbol of coastal erosion in Ganjam. Homes were washed away and families were relocated as the sea steadily advanced. Today, the challenge continues. 🌊

Now, communities in Bada Aryapalli, Sana Aryapalli, Katur and K. Aryapalli are facing a similar threat. Roads, a cremation ground and other community assets have been affected, while families are increasingly worried about their homes, livelihoods and children’s safety. 🏠🎒

The immediate demand for protective measures is important. But coastal resilience cannot depend only on walls, embankments or relocation after disaster strikes.

We need to invest in community-led resilience :

🗺️ Map coastal commons and vulnerable areas with local communities
👥 Combine scientific evidence with traditional/local knowledge
🌱 Protect natural coastal buffers and ecosystems
🎣 Ensure relocation protects livelihoods and access to commons
🚨 Strengthen local early-warning and disaster preparedness
🤝 Involve communities in planning, implementation and monitoring

Podampeta should not become only a memory, and Aryapalli should not become the next Podampeta.

🌊 The people living with the coast must be at the centre of decisions about its future.

The youth of Purunabandha Village are proving that climate action starts with local leadership.

By organizing a seed ball preparation activity, they brought together children from their village to learn, create, and take the first step towards restoring nature. More than making seed balls, they planted the values of responsibility, teamwork, and environmental stewardship in the hearts of the next generation.

What makes this initiative truly inspiring is that the youth led every step of the process. They mobilized their community, guided the children, and showed that meaningful change doesn't always require big resources it begins with committed people and a shared vision.

At Youth for Social Development (YSD), we were proud to mentor and support this journey. The real heroes are the young changemakers who are shaping a greener, more climate-resilient future for their village.

🏚️🌊 A Village Slowly Disappearing into the Bay of Bengal

Today, the very place where we stood in Podampeta, Ganjam, Odisha has been swallowed by the sea.

Once home to over 500 fishing families, Podampeta is losing its land, homes, and memories to relentless coastal erosion. Nearly 200 houses have already disappeared, and every high tide brings the sea closer.

This isn't just about rising waters it's about families losing their homes, livelihoods, and identity.

At Youth for Social Development (YSD), we are working with coastal communities to build climate resilience, support safe relocation, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities beyond fishing.
