Belagavi is currently facing a harsh reality. With many neighborhoods receiving water only once a week and a projected monsoon deficit looming, every drop we waste today is a drop we will desperately need tomorrow.

It has become increasingly disheartening to see hose pipes being used to wash vehicles and paved compounds. In a time of scarcity, using treated water for cleaning dust is more than just a habit—it’s an act that ignores the struggle of our fellow citizens.

Let’s shift our perspective:
Buckets over Hoses: Switching to a bucket and sponge for vehicles can save up to **80%** of the water usually lost to a running hose.
Sweep, Don’t Spray:Use a broom to clean your compounds. Paved surfaces don't need a "bath" while our groundwater tables are depleting.

Prioritize the Living: If you have water to spare, let it nourish the soil and the trees that provide us shade and oxygen, rather than washing away dust that will return tomorrow.

The rains may be delayed or deficient, but our responsibility cannot be. Let’s respect our resources before the taps run completely dry.

High Heat, Higher Energy! ☀️🌳

We spent our Sunday morning at the Benkanhalli Agroforestry plot with an incredible group of students from Love Dale Central School. Despite the rising summer temperatures, their enthusiasm turned a workday into a masterclass in restoration.

Working in a chemical-free, biodiverse space isn't just about planting; it’s about nurturing the entire ecosystem. The students rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work:
Chopping live mulch to keep the ground cool and retain moisture.
Clearing undergrowth to give our native species room to breathe.
Loosening the soil and adding manure to enrich the earth naturally.

Seeing the next generation engage with the art of farming reminds us why we do what we do.

They weren't just moving earth; they were connecting with the life cycles that sustain us all.
A massive shout-out to the students and staff of Love Dale Central School for joining our mission to build a greener, healthier future.

Now, with the prospects of a deficient monsoon, more than ever, is the need to repeatedly remind people that we need to conserve this limited resource.
Requesting everyone to pay attention and do these few things to ensure that every drop is used wisely.
1. Stop washing household compounds with hose pipes and generous bucketfuls of water
2. Use limited water to wash your cars.
3. Collect the water from your RO filer discharge and use it in your gardens or for washing purposes
4. Avoid running taps while brushing teeth or shaving
5. Install rainwater harvesting systems for households and apartments or just make sure that the water flow during rain is diverted to open soil spaces

The villagers of 𝗛𝗮𝗯𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶 and 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗱𝗮 in the 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗶 face a relentless cycle: heavy monsoon rains, followed by water scarcity due to the lateritic strata, and constant animal invasions on their farms.

During our recent visit with Nirmala Pendse of Ekal Abhiyan, we began identifying how agroforestry can help these communities adapt.

Beyond the 10th anniversary, the mission continues with renewed energy! 🌿

For our 522nd consecutive Sunday, we are heading to Mahalenhatti to plant 100 trees across 20 native species.

This drive is all about creating a dedicated comfortable corner for our birds and pollinators to nest and rest.

We are especially excited to have school children joining us to get their hands in the soil and learn the art of restoration.

Yesterday at Gajpati village, we had the opportunity to engage in some truly meaningful conversations regarding the intersection of environment and livelihood. 🌍🌱

The heart of our discussion centered on the pressing challenges of **climate change** and its direct impact on both agricultural yields and community health. We explored the limitations of current chemical-based farming practices and how a shift toward agroforestry collaborations can offer a resilient, sustainable path forward—restoring the soil and securing a healthier future for the village.

A huge thank you to Sagar Ganachari for introducing our work and to Prasanna for documenting these moments and adding such value to the dialogue. 📸✨

𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐬: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅

In our quest for "maintenance-free" landscapes, we have turned to interlocking pavers and extensive concrete spreads as the ultimate tools of urban order. This obsession with wall-to-wall pavering/cementing has moved beyond public streets and deep into our household and institutional compounds, creating a "Concrete Shroud" that is slowly suffocating the urban ecosystems.

The most immediate victim is the soil. Whether it is a layer of pavers or a solid pour of concrete, sealing the earth severs the vital exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the ground. Soil is a living, breathing organism; without oxygen, the microbes that maintain fertility die, leaving the earth beneath our feet sterile and "dead."
This shroud also acts as a catalyst for localized climate crises. These hard surfaces function as thermal batteries, absorbing solar radiation and creating an 𝑼𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 (𝑼𝑯𝑰). By replacing living earth with thermal mass, we intensify heatwaves and exacerbate extreme climate events. When the monsoons arrive, this sealed earth prevents groundwater recharge, turning life-giving rain into destructive urban runoff and flash floods.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒚

The tragedy of the shroud is most visible in our trees. When we spread concrete or pavers right up to a tree's trunk, we generate instability. Restricted roots cannot access moisture or oxygen, leading to hydraulic failure and root decay. The space just isn't conducive for healthy growth. Moreover when we engineer our urban spaces, we also chop off healthy roots, thus creating an imbalance.
When these weakened trees inevitably collapse during a storm, a psychological shift occurs: we stop seeing trees as life-support systems and start seeing them as threats to our life and property. This "empathy gap" leads us to trade natural shade for artificial shelters, which only further heats our streets. We treat the symptom (the falling tree) rather than the cause (the concrete shroud); and we BLAME IT ON THE TREES.
