Quantum Dots and it’s applications
September 12, 2024 / MITWS India / Edit
Quantum dots (QDs) are artificial ‘nanoscale particles, typically ranging in size from 1 to 100 nanometers’ that are made of semiconductor materials and have a size of a few nanometers. They are sometimes called “artificial atoms” because they behave like individual atoms with discrete energy levels. Quantum dots are nanoparticles made from semiconducting materials.

Properties of Quantum Dots:

Quantum Confinement Effects: Quantum dots demonstrate quantum confinement effects, where electrons and holes are confined within a limited volume. …
Semiconducting Properties: Quantum dots exhibit semiconducting behavior due to their small size.
Two general approaches for the preparation of QDs have been reported over the last decade: (1) formation of nanosized semiconductor particles through colloidal chemistry and (2) epitaxial growth and/or nanoscale patterning.

The dots show quantum effects because they are so little. This means that electrons inside the dot are trapped and can only occupy defined energy levels. The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognized the discovery and development of quantum dots (QDs), engineered core/shell semiconductor nanoparticles with precisely designed and tailor-made particle architectures and surface chemistries, that are so tiny that their sizes determine their properties. The first quantum dots were synthesized in a glass matrix by Alexei A. Onushchenko and Alexey Ekimov in 1981 at the Vavilov State Optical Institute and independently in colloidal suspension by Louis E. The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded 117 times to 225 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2023. John Bardeen is the only laureate who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics twice, in 1956 and 1972. This means that a total of 224 individuals have received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Quantum dots are researched as contrast agents for diagnosis and detection, due to narrow emission spectra, high light stability, and wide and continuous absorption spectra. Additionally, the energy spectrum of these nanosystems can also be tailored by controlling the size, shape, and energy levels. The main advantage of using QDs is their high photo-stability, which is 100-1000 times higher than fluorescent dyes. They also possess longer fluorescence lifetime resulting in higher quantum yield

Quantum dots typically cost more than $2,000 per gram from commercial sources, and pricey solvents like octadecene, or ODE – the least expensive solvent used in quantum dot preparation today – account for about 90 percent costs of raw materials.

Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductors-based nanomaterials with numerous biomedical applications such as drug delivery, live imaging, and medical diagnosis, in addition to other applications beyond medicine such as in solar cells. The high extinction coefficient of QDs offers extraordinary optical behaviors to make solid-state lighting, photo-detectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), display devices, fluorescent biological labeling, composites, and medical imaging.

The toxicity of quantum dots to cells is a major issue. The coating of quantum dots can be cytotoxic such as mercaptoacetic acid. A damaging effect on cells becomes visible at concentrations above ~6μM for mercaptoacetic acid and above 30μM for PEG-silica coated quantum dots

While researchers have never found a wormhole in our universe, scientists often see wormholes described in the solutions to important physics equations. Most prominently, the solutions to the equations behind Einstein’s theory of space-time and general relativity include wormholes. More recently, a team announced that it had formed a simulation of a baby wormhole—a type of bridge through reality created from two black holes—using a quantum computer. Though the result was covered widely in the press, it wasn’t exactly the breakthrough that many imagined. “What has been created is more like some weird quantum mechanical property of matter that has mathematical properties related to wormholes,” Quataert says. “It’s more of a conceptual connection than a literal connection.”

Nevertheless, the research is promising, Maldacena says, and more powerful quantum computers in the future could someday generate objects that simulate black holes using Albert Einstein’s equations, allowing physicists to study their behavior in detail.

If he had an actual black hole in his lab, Quataert would be very interested to know more about the bright beacons of light called accretion disks that these objects produce when ripping nearby material to shreds. “I would throw matter at the black hole to create a little accretion disk and watch the gas spiral and produce lots of light,” he says. “It would be great to understand in a controlled setting how those accretion disks actually work.”

Welcome to GCU-MITWS.

My dear friend

We are in the process of establishing "Global Community University." This university is community- and learner-centric, a positive approach to development, a role model university for sustainable development, a place for promoting education in emergent areas in all the subjects, and we are especially looking for globally important themes and subjects related to ancient, current, and futuristic education. The participation of the community is indeed significant for the establishment of this university. You can join us in any role to make this mammoth dream project a reality. We are inviting you all to be a part of it. You may associate with us in the capacity of your choice. Kindly visit the website (which is being developed to communicate the dreams to others; the work is in progress and we are continuously upgrading the things here). As we are in the process of arranging all the required resources and developing a world-class team to materialize the dream project, things seem to be easier and more workable with the support and help of people from all sections of society. Your every suggestion and piece of advice is equally significant and important for us. This university is democratic in nature, and all our policies and management decisions will be taken or implemented by considering the thoughts and suggestions of all concerned parties and stakeholders.
