Thank you “It is tough. Many replicas on the internet are made on power looms, while a lot of work goes into ours. It is tough for a customer to identify the real weaves, and it is tough for us to prove the authenticity of the product,” says textile expert Hemalatha Jain, who works with artisans across Karnataka to breathe life into the region's ancient and rare handloom weaves.

Born in Bengaluru, Hemlatha is on a journey to revive the numerous weaves of the region. She has a Ph.D. in textiles and a Post Doctorate in crafts. “I worked at the Kansas State University, USA, and returned to India in 2014. I spent the following year visiting villages and hamlets and speaking to the artisans here,” she says.

The one-year sojourn only revealed how the crafts were now languishing, and she decided to go on a mission to bring back the lost weaves of Karnataka. The venture started in 2015 with a team of two and has now expanded to 55 weavers, 20 dyers and spinners, and hundreds associated, working towards bringing back the lost weaves.
