An exam can be a test of what you’ve learned. But sometimes, it also marks how far you’ve come.

This week, students at VAANI’s Higher Education Academy sat for their first Unit 1 examination, held from September 23 to October 1.

For students beginning a new academic journey, it is a significant milestone — moving from learning in the classroom to demonstrating what they have understood and retained.

And they didn’t have to navigate it alone.

During the examination period, Deepesh Nair and Gauri Kanchan from TEACH visited the Academy. Gauri stayed through the exams, supporting the students and interacting with both students and faculty.

That support matters.

Because creating access to higher education is not simply about opening the classroom door. It is about building the support systems that help students learn, participate and move forward with confidence.

One exam at a time. One milestone at a time.

Sometimes, a grammar lesson needs more than a textbook. It needs a little creativity.

At VAANI’s Higher Education Academy, students recently turned grammar into something they could see, create and explain.

Working in groups, they created grammar charts and then presented them to their peers, explaining not just what they had made, but how they had put it together.

There’s something powerful about learning this way.

When students create together, they have to discuss ideas, make decisions, explain their thinking and listen to one another. A classroom activity becomes an opportunity to build communication, collaboration and confidence alongside academic learning.

Because education is not only about getting the right answer.

It’s also about finding your voice and being able to share what you know.

At VAANI, parents are not only learning from professionals. They are learning from each other.

In a special weekend computer session, parents came together as teachers, learners and problem-solvers—sharing what they know and helping one another build new skills.

This is the power of Parent-to-Parent Teaching.

One parent discovers something new. Another learns from that experience. Knowledge moves across the room, confidence grows, and what began as one person’s learning becomes something the whole community can carry forward.

For families of Deaf children, peer support can create something invaluable: the confidence that you are not navigating the journey alone—and that your own experience can help another family move forward.

That is parent leadership in action.
