Saahas, a not for profit NGO, was set up in 2001 under the Society’s Act by Ms. Saahas primarily implements programs based on the concepts of ‘Source Segregation’ and ‘Decentralized Waste Management’ within the framework of the Municipal Solid Waste Management and Handling Rules, 2016. Saahas works with government institutions, companies, households and schools to bring attention to best practices in solid waste management, as well as establish collection and processing infrastructure. Its programs also provide livelihood opportunities for the informal sector and those at the bottom of the value chain. The head office of Saahas is in Bangalore with project offices in Gurgaon Gujarat, Hubbali and Ballary.

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Saahas conducted a training session for 28 healthcare professionals at Paras Hospital on Bio-Medical Waste Management and the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026.

The session focused on strengthening awareness and responsible waste management practices within healthcare facilities, encouraging participants to actively engage in discussions around better waste handling and management.

As hospitals are recognised as Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) under the SWM Rules, 2026, such capacity-building initiatives play an important role in promoting sustainable and compliant waste management practices.

The session also marks an important step towards building meaningful collaboration with Paras Hospital for a cleaner and more responsible healthcare environment.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗺 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

We have entered into a three-year partnership with Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), Assam and Janaagraha under (DSER) to strengthen solid waste management systems in Jorhat, Nalbari and Dibrugarh. As part of the MoU, we will also share the learnings from the 3 cities to the other 7 cities of the DSER program,

The partnership will focus on strengthening segregation at source and collection systems, supporting IEC and behaviour-change efforts, building the capacities of sanitation teams, improving resource recovery through better processing systems and strengthening monitoring.

When policies are there since long, why is implementation lacking? While there are many reasons for this, one of the major reasons we observed in our projects was the gap in the capacities of the implementation agency - Elected body, officials, on-ground staff and the SHGs/NGOs in this space. In 2022, we decided to take this exercise of capacity building beyond our project areas and share our learnings on broader platforms. Being empanelled as Swachata Knowledge Partner enabled us to take our capacity building modules to district and state levels workshops. In the coming years we hope to ELEVATE the system for better implementation of the policies.

We had spoken about the health and environmental impact of Gutka sachets being sold in the market, the lapse in enforcement and the loopholes in the policy that businesses are taking advantage of, in Episode 3 of our explainer series - Saahas Explains, titled ‘'Gutka sachets...The Invisible Menace’. We are glad that there is some action on the two important issues highlighted in the episode - using plastic packaging, and celebrity endorsements through surrogate ads.
We hope that these efforts lead to reduction in usage of the harmful gutkas and in reduction of the waste from the packaging in plastic sachets.
