Today I was part of a panel discussion on Tere Mere Sapne, a premarital communication and counseling initiative launched by the National Commission for Women (NCW). In Karnataka, the programme will be implemented under the name Koodi Baalona.
The aim of the initiative is to help young couples, or those preparing for marriage, understand and discuss essential aspects of marital life. This includes expectations, effective communication, gender equality, shared responsibilities, mutual respect, shared finances, emotional well-being, family dynamics, financial planning, and conflict-resolution skills.
The scheme responds to the changing social environment, the decline of joint family systems, evolving gender roles and expectations, and the growing influence of modern media. These shifts often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts within marriages. Premarital counselling under this programme is designed to prepare couples to navigate these challenges with awareness and confidence.
As part of the initiative, couples will have access to workshops, interactive sessions, and guidance on mental health and social issues. These efforts aim to strengthen relationships early on and potentially reduce the risk of domestic disputes or marital breakdowns or divorce.
I am sure government will face lots of challenges in implementing it properly. But I hope and pray the initiative is channalised correctly and it's purpose is met.
