Who keeps our cities clean, yet often remains unseen?

Bianca Fernandes, Manager – Circular Economy and Institutional Engagement at Hasiru Dala, explains who waste pickers are and why their inclusion in the new Solid Waste Management Rules matters.

Waste pickers have always been part of the waste management system—recovering recyclables, reducing landfill burden, and supporting circular economies.

What has changed now is recognition.

The new rules acknowledge waste pickers as key contributors, making their inclusion in city systems no longer optional, but essential.

Recognition leads to dignity. Inclusion leads to justice.

From old clothes to new possibilities ♻️👕✨

Hasiru Dala in collaboration with Learning to Fly Apartments carried out an old textile collection drive to ensure discarded textiles were managed responsibly.

A total of 285 kg of old textiles were collected:
👚 158 kg went for reselling
♻️ 98 kg went for recycling
🧵 13 kg went for downcycling
🚮 16 kg was rejected and sent for appropriate waste processing

Every old garment has the potential for a second life when disposed of responsibly. Small community actions can create lasting environmental impact.

Designed for safety. Delivered for impact. ♻️🧤

400+ PPE kits distributed across Dry Waste Collection Centres in Bengaluru—because waste pickers deserve safety, dignity, and protection at work.

Across DWCCs, waste pickers handle mixed waste every day and face risks like cuts, infections, and unsafe working conditions. Access to the right protective gear can make all the difference.

This initiative is a part of Saamuhika Shakti, a collective impact initiative working to enable informal waste pickers in Bengaluru to have greater agency to lead secure and dignified lives.

Each PPE kit includes:
👢 Boots
😷 Masks
🧣 Bandanas
🧥 Jackets
🧤 Gloves
Safer work means fewer injuries, lower healthcare costs, and better wellbeing.

Because protecting waste pickers means protecting the people who keep our cities clean.

While the city sleeps, waste pickers begin their day ♻️

They sort what we throw away.
Plastic from paper.
Value from waste.
Hope from what’s discarded.

Their work is physically exhausting, carries daily health risks, and often goes unseen—yet they continue showing up every single day to keep our cities cleaner and our environment healthier.

Waste pickers are not invisible.
They are environmental champions.

It’s time we recognise, respect, and protect the people who handle our waste.

Respect waste pickers. Respect their labour. Respect their dignity.

From crisis to decentralised solutions ♻️🏙️

Our Research and Policy team members — Dhrishya, Angel, Adil, and Nithish — presented their ongoing paper, “From Waste Crisis to Decentralised Solutions: Bengaluru’s Solid Waste Management Transition,” at the workshop “Envisioning Labour-Led Urban Development” hosted by the Global Development Institute at the The University of Manchester.

The paper traces the evolution of Bengaluru’s Dry Waste Collection Centre (DWCC) model, exploring how it emerged from the city’s waste crisis and the central role of labour in shaping this decentralised system.

It reflects on the sustained efforts of waste pickers, citizen groups, NGOs, and government actors who made this model possible — and the challenges that continue along the way.

Building cities that work starts with recognising the people who make them work. 🌍✨
