Local wisdom meets modern science!

We're celebrating the first graduates of the Ocean Stewardship initiative in Palk Bay.

So proud of the first cohort of the Ocean Stewardship initiative graduates in Palk Bay, Tamil Nadu! These young coastal leaders now have the scientific tools and knowledge to actively conserve and manage their own marine resources.

Over the past year, 8 ocean stewards have been mentored in the science-based monitoring, data collection, and research methods, enabling them to blend traditional knowledge with conventional scientific approaches. They were actively involved in monitoring critical economic and ecological resources of the Palk Bay, including elasmobranchs, Blue Swimming crab, and trawl bycatch. Each steward also embarked on their short-term individual projects, drawing on the fisher communities’ traditional knowledge and personal observations.

It was a great moment for these stewards to present their findings in front of key dignitaries, including the Deputy Director of Fisheries, Ramanathapuram, the Assistant Director of Fisheries for Rameshwaram and Mandapam, and local fisher leaders whose invaluable support has been essential to the success of this initiative.

Huge congratulations to our stewards for their commitment to the well-being of their community and their enthusiasm for participating in local governance initiatives in the future. We are excited to continue working with them in various capacities!💙
