A New Chapter at The Concerned for Working Children

We are writing to share an important moment of transition in the journey of The Concerned for Working Children (CWC).
After many years of dedicated service, leadership and commitment to CWC, Kavita Ratna our Executive Director, will be retiring from the organisation. Her last official working day will be 31 August 2026.

Kavita’s association with CWC has been much more than a leadership role. Over the years, she has brought her deep commitment to children’s rights, her belief in children’s voices and participation, and her care for the organisation and its people to all that she has done. Her guidance and contribution have helped shape and strengthen CWC’s work in many ways.

As she begins this new chapter, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Kavita for her years of dedication, for the relationships she has nurtured, and for the many ways in which she has contributed to CWC’s journey. We will deeply value and remember her contribution, and we wish her joy, fulfilment and many wonderful new beginnings.

At the same time, we are happy to welcome Shivanand Shetty as the Executive Director of CWC, with effect from 1 September 2026. As Deputy Executive Director CWC, Shivanand has been closely associated with CWC’s work and brings with him experience, commitment and a strong understanding of the organisation and its values. We look forward to his leadership as CWC enters this new chapter and continues its journey towards a more just and equitable world for children and young people.

As always, we are grateful for the trust, friendship and partnership of everyone who has been part of CWC’s journey. We look forward to continuing this journey together.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Begins with Protecting Adolescents

“If the law protects us, why is alcohol still so close to our schools, homes and lives?”

This is the question children are raising, not to blame individuals, but to demand accountability, effective enforcement and stronger prevention.

A Nasha Mukt Bharat must begin by creating environments where children and adolescents are protected from the early normalisation and easy availability of alcohol, to***co, ci******es and other addictive substances.

ಇಂದು #ನಮ್ಮಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೂನ್ 21ರ #ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ_ಯೋಗ_ದಿನವನ್ನು ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಯೋಗದ ಮಹತ್ವವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿ, ದ್ವಿಪಾದಾಸನ, ಗರುಡಾಸನ, ತ್ರಿಕೋಣಾಸನ, ಚಕ್ರಾಸನ ಹಾಗೂ ನಟರಾಜಾಸನ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ವಿವಿಧ ಯೋಗಾಸನಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ನಮ್ಮ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಯೋಗಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಇದರಿಂದ ಅವರ ದೈಹಿಕ, ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಯೋಗವು ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ಏಕಾಗ್ರತೆ, ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಸ್ತನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಾಯಕವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಯೋಗ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.

🏃🏾‍♂️🎈 This International Day of Play, we at The Concerned for Working Children (CWC) reaffirm our commitment to promoting play as both a fundamental right and a powerful tool for change. 🌈🌱

Play is not simply recreation. It is a powerful pathway through which children realise their rights to development, protection and participation. Whether through 🪁 community and traditional games, 🥏 ⚽competitive sports or simply running, laughing and playing together 🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♂️, play helps children build confidence, strengthen relationships, express themselves, learn, lead and shape the world around them.

At CWC, we have long used play as a way to make conversations with children more authentic, accessible and meaningful. Traditional games such as Snakes and Ladders, treasure hunts, kite flying, role plays, storytelling, quizzes and other playful activities have helped children explore and discuss complex issues relating to their rights, citizenship, participation, mental health and wellbeing. By creating safe, engaging and child-friendly spaces, play enables children to express their experiences, articulate their needs and actively shape solutions that matter to them. ✨

🌾🌈 In 2026, we are especially focused on harnessing the power of play to reach and empower some of the most excluded and vulnerable children. Through our direct work in our field communities in Udupi and Vijayanagara districts of Karnataka and through CWC's State Resource Centre, we are working alongside working children, children with disabilities, and children—especially girls and young women—from vulnerable tribal and rural communities.

🙋🏾‍♀️ We are also committed to creating and facilitating national and international spaces where children can share their experiences, engage in dialogue, and demonstrate the transformative power of play in their own lives and communities.

🥏🌱Thus as we mark this International Day of Play, at CWC we celebrate the power of play not only to enrich childhood, but also to enable children to become active citizens, comm unity leaders and changemakers.

Today as we mark International Day of Play, we are delighted to announce the 8th Young Persons’ Peer Learning Session under Project Ankur by The Concerned for Working Children (CWC).

🥏🏃🏿‍♂️✨From Play to Power: Empowering Children to Lead & Transform their Communities through Frisbee 🥏🏃🏿‍♂️✨

Date: 17 June 2026
Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM IST

This unique session will be led by children and young people from Azad Jugnu Club , 🥏 Flying Teetar, 🥏 Lahaar and 🥏 Majal, facilitated by Muskaan, Madhya Pradesh.

More than a conversation about sport, these young changemakers will showcase how children and young people from highly marginalised communities are using Frisbee as a tool for leadership, participation, inclusion, community mobilisation and social transformation. Their journeys demonstrate how play can build confidence, strengthen collective action and create meaningful change.

The session will be conducted in Hindi, with translation support available in English, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali and Odiya.

We are happy to share our presentation "Empowerment, Education & Employment: A Rotary Global Grant Partnership", in Trondhjem, Norway, showcasing how the integration of vocational training, empowerment education, and sustainable livelihood support has enabled young people to build secure and dignified futures.

Representing The Concerned for Working Children (CWC), Kavita Ratna, its Executive Director, brought to life the voices of young people who shared how the training paved the way for their self-reliance—giving them the confidence to speak without fear or hesitation, helping them secure meaningful employment, and enabling them to start earning immediately through the support provided to establish their livelihoods. As they reflected, the skills, confidence, and opportunities gained through the programme will continue to support them throughout their lives.

The presentation also highlighted how local self-governments and communities have recognised the value and impact of this model and have committed to continuing their support to sustain and expand these opportunities for future generations of young people.

In a very enriching weekend, Kavita Ratna, Executive Director, and Shivanand Shetty, Deputy Executive Director of The Concerned for Working Children (CWC), engaged in a rich and thought-provoking dialogue with the Youth Council of Trondheim, Norway.

The exchange focused on the meaning and practice of ethical participation of children and young people, exploring critical questions around representation, inclusion, equality, and equity. Discussions examined how the voices of those who are often excluded can be brought into decision-making processes and how sensitive issues can be effectively raised and addressed.

The conversation also explored ways to strengthen youth participation beyond youth councils, including within school councils and other community spaces, while considering how young people who are not part of formal structures can also be represented.

The members of the Youth Council demonstrated deep interest, openness, and sensitivity throughout the discussion, contributing to a highly engaging and participatory exchange of perspectives and experiences.

At the ongoing 3rd Nordic Global Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Conference in Oslo, Norway, Kavita Ratna, Executive Director of The Concerned for Working Children (CWC), highlighted the need to place children, adolescents and young people at the heart of global mental health initiatives.

In her presentation, "Moving Beyond Resilience to Rejuvenate", she emphasised the importance of recognising and strengthening the agency of young people and ensuring their meaningful participation in shaping solutions to issues that affect them, their communities and society at large.

Kavita also called for stronger global strategic collaboration to advance the mental health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, young people and their communities. She outlined key pathways for achieving this, including:
• Establishing and sustaining affirmative partnerships with local, national and global agencies and institutions
• Strengthening collaboration with administrators at multiple levels
• Creating enabling conditions for effective interventions
• Elevating young people’s concerns as a governance priority, backed by strong institutional commitment

Ensuring the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people requires not only effective programmes, but also meaningful partnerships, supportive systems and the active participation of young people in shaping the decisions that affect their lives.
