The BeSt festival is the flagship event of the Storytelling Society bringing in various aspects and forms of Oral Storytelling to the city

The BeSt festival is the flagship yearly festival of the Bangalore Storytelling Festival . This year the fest is planned on the 26th and 27th of November

The Bangalore Storytelling Society is a body of Storytellers who have come together under a common umbrella for the purpose of learning, nurturing, reviving, training and popularizing the art of Oral Storytelling. Bangalore Storytelling Society

(BSS), a registered body, formed in 2013, is dedicated to reviving, promoting, nurturing the art of oral storytelling and popularizing it as a performance medium. The BSS conducts regular storytelling meet ups, festivals and workshops. Celebrating Karnataka’s diversity and heritage in crafts, cuisines, conservation and culture, BSS brings to you a Tapestry of Tales. To weave this beautiful tapestry, we have Vrunda Sekhar, who will give a peek into the world of Ilkal weaves, Monika Manchanda, who will bring in the aroma of food stories in Bangalore, Krithi Karanth, who will give us a glimpse into the world of wildlife conservation and Anil Ravindran, who will take us into the world of Coffee and its aromatic tales.

Our next exciting segment in the BeSt festival 2024 is " The learning capsule" .

The BeSt Festival Learning Capsule is curated keeping in mind the knowledge seekers of Bengaluru who aim to upskill themselves and delve deeper in to the art of storytelling through unique workshops by eminent storytellers and artists from Karnataka.
This year's learning capsule is titled " Understanding the Special String Puppets of India" . It will be led by the eminent storyteller, Padmashri awardee and the founder director of Dhaatu Puppet Theatre, Smt.Anupama Hoskere from Bengaluru.
This workshop will give you an idea of storytelling through a puppeteer's lens. Please note that this can be attended by anyone above 16 years of age and does not require one to know about puppetry or storytelling as a pre requirement.This will be an experience in itself.

Bengaluru - a city known to be many centuries old. What stories has this city seen? What stories of this city have we experienced? Welcome to Land, Lakes and Lores. Tales of Bengaluru that shaped the city will be shared by a motley group of an archeologist, author, actor, educator and lake warrior - all through the lovely art of oral storytelling. Like the stories and this beautiful city, Land, Lakes and Lores is open to people of all ages.

Shruthi Veena Vishwanath (she/they) is a singer, songcatcher, stirrer of her stories, educator and curator. Her practice celebrates mystic music traditions from South Asia and beyond. Their work strives to bring voices that aren't known, especially of women, to the fore, and she has composed and researched extensively on folk, spiritual and mystic songs of west, south-west and central India. Trained in classical music for many years, they later dived deep into the roots of the traditions, travelling and learning from traditional practitioners in rural areas. Shruthi has performed at festivals and venues across the world, spoken at leading universities on traditional music and received multiple grants for research and performance. She currently leads an inclusive online community for song-learning called Music in the Machan.

23 years old Minakshi Khati, popularly known as Aipan Girl, who is working since December 2019 to revive the traditional art form of Kumaon – Aipan. She used to make Aipan designs since childhood with her mother and grandmother. She said that this local art is gradually losing its identity among the young generation so she started where Aipan drawings in various items used in home decor and started to put them on online.“Now we also run national and international workshops for Aipan drawings as many people want to learn this art form,” said Khati. Several women know Aipan and through this initiative the local women get to showcase their talent across the world. Khati informed that she would soon start work to promote this Folk art Globally.
