Shishu Mandir

Shishu Mandir Shishu Mandir is a Bangalore-based NGO that works for disadvantaged children through its home, school and vocational centre.

Shishu Mandir is also a licensed adoption agency. Founded by Hella Mundhra in 1983 as a children's home, Shishu Mandir is an NGO that offers a comprehensive support system with a free school, vocational training and higher education. The entire community, where the Shishu children come from, is supported through various welfare projects in order to allow the children to develop to the best of thei

r abilities and also as a way of igniting hope within the communities. Shishu Mandir is registered as a Society in India and runs entirely on donations. Thus far, financial support has been received through fundraising activities in India and Germany. The number of beneficiaries has reached 530 on a daily basis, which is comparatively small number, but in tune with the organisation's focus on providing high quality support to a few rather than superficial support to many. Shishu Mandir is based near KR Puram at Bangalore, reaching out to 12 villages in the vicinity. There are 45,000 residents in this area out of whom 47% live below the poverty line (BPL), which is defined as income of less than Rs 750 per person per month. ๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrating Our Founder | A Life Chosen in Service ๐ŸŒฑ

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Our Beloved Mama, a woman whose life reflects moral courage, quiet strength, and unwavering compassion.

๐ŸŒ Born in post-war Germany and shaped by humanist and pacifist ideals, Hella chose responsibility over comfort and purpose over privilege. Her journey led her to India, where she committed her life to serving the most vulnerable, especially children born into circumstances of poverty and neglect.

๐Ÿ  From healthcare initiatives to the founding of Shishu Mandir, her vision grew into a holistic ecosystem of care, education, and inner growth.

๐Ÿ“š What began with a few children has evolved into homes, schools, community colleges, and grassroots initiatives, all rooted in dignity, integrity, self-respect, and compassion.

โœจ On her birthday, we honour a living legacy, one built quietly, sustained ethically, and continued through every child whose future has been transformed.

๐Ÿ’ Happy Birthday, Mama!
Your vision continues to guide, inspire, and uplift generations.

We are very excited to share a proud moment for our school! ๐ŸŒโœจ
A team of 2 teachers, guided by Swetha Rani, and 10 students recently took part in international collaboration projects made possible by the British Council.

Our journey with Crowdys Hill School, UK began through Padlet , where students from both countries exchanged ideas and worked together on a real-life challenge:
๐Ÿ’ก โ€œHow can we reduce waste and pollution in the school environment?โ€

From sharing ideas to building prototypes, our students learnt to think creatively, work as a team, and look at problems with empathy and responsibility. The experience helped them grow not just as learners, but as thoughtful global citizens.

Along the way, our school also participated in:
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ The UKโ€“India Collaboration Event
๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ The Future STEM Challenge Project

And we proudly submitted our entry for the Study UK โ€“ Create to Connect Competition, where our students created a powerful 1-minute video celebrating the connections between India and the UK.
This journey has filled our learners with confidence and unforgettable experiences that will stay with them for years to come.
A heartfelt thanks to the for this wonderful opportunity. ๐ŸŒŸ

We come with a request to friends and wellwishers here. This year also, we have been nominated for the WBS Gruppe Donation (link is https://www.wbs-gruppe.de/herzensprojekte/detail/23/)

In this fundraiser, an NGO has to be nominated and the one that secures the highest number of votes will receive 10,000 Euros in donation.

To cast your vote, please click on this link below (it's in German). For those who don't read German, the text introduces Shishu Mandir with a note from Dennis who nominated us:

"I have known the association for several years. My wife Sabrina worked there as a volunteer in the home in Bengaluru from 2002 to 2003. We visited the Shishu Mandir facilities on two trips through India in 2003 and 2008 and saw how effective the help is on site. We are still convinced of the work of the association on site, which is why we have been actively supporting it for a few years now."
Dennis S. suggested Shishu Mandir โ€“ Future for Children e. V.

This week, we were able to distribute 50 e-autos to women in the neighbourhood as part of the E-Autos Initiative, with the support of Herbalife. The event was held at Shishu Mandir and in the presence of Dr Hella Mundhra, Founder, Shishu Mandir, Mrs Manjula Aravinda Limbavali, MLA, Mahadevapura Constituency. The autos were presented by Ajay Khanna, Managing Director of Herbalife India.

The "Eco-Wheels Women's Initiative" aims to support marginalized women by providing opportunities for economic independence and skill development. We have seen much success from the project. The beneficiaries are women who have endured severe abuse or abandonment, are widowed, or struggle to provide even the basic necessities for their children. These women include single mothers and wives of alcoholic husbands. They are often living below the poverty line without adequate shelter. The success of the auto project ensure greater upliftment and an opportunity to better their lives.

The event was covered by English and Kannada media.

Yesterday was and a celebration at Shishu Mandir. We are fortunate to have volunteers who share their skills with our children, some of which are quite unique. Like juggling. Being taught by our unicycling coach, David Foy.

We had close to 15 children who took part juggling endurance (3 balls), juggling endurance (3 clubs), 1km run while juggling (called joggling) and an obstacle course. Swapna won the juggling endurance for her record of 40 minutes. Thilothama won the 1km joggle (jogging and juggling combined) with a time of 5:12.13.

Guest juggler, Arjun MC demonstrated his juggling skills and had a session with some of the children. All in all, a good day at school!

It's important to involve the and make incremental changes that impact individuals, families and the larger community if we need lasting change. When we began working out of KR Puram in Bangalore, the surrounding community needed support. Over the years, we have been able to find ways to do so. Today, we run interventions in , and To learn more about our Community Initiatives, do visit us at

We work with the community and provide support in a number of ways. The childcare centre, house construction, women's self-help groups, purified drinking water, healthcare are just some of the areas we work in.
