World Hunger Day (May 28th) is a sobering reminder of the paradox in our global food system: we produce enough to feed everyone, yet millions go to bed hungry. We at The Akshaya Patra Foundation are dedicated to close the gap between produced food and those who need it the most.

This World Hunger Day, let us take a step towards ensuring we reduce as much food waste as possible. Here are ways we can curb food waste:

As individuals: With household waste being the largest contributor to global food waste, ensuring careful portioning during purchases, giving away unused, edible food to the needy, at home vermicomposting and ensuring that food and non-food waste is segregated are some ways waste can be curbed at home.

As food service ventures: Food service ventures can take measures to ensure minimal food wastage like diversifying food portion options, offering packaging services, waste composting and charging for excess wastage.

Higher quality ingredients, proper packaging, storage and refrigeration can also prolong the usability of food. Additionally, community refrigerators and public access food storage bins are great ways for local food businesses to share
unused, edible food to the needy before spoilage.

Know any nifty ways to curb food waste? Leave a comment and let us know!
