Kinda chic to believe being future-ready is not limited to getting good marks.

Itโ€™s about being able to speak up, ask questions, try new things, work with others, solve problems, make decisions, deal with challenges and keep learning.

A lot of these skills come from people and experiences outside our textbooks too.

Ask a teacher what they changed this year, and most of them will say nothing much.

That nothing much is what we celebrate. Small Steps to Build Great Schools is our annual celebration of the teachers, head teachers and Anganwadi workers behind the smallest improvements in a school. A storeroom that became a library. A register kept differently. A child allowed to be wrong out loud. Children feel those every day.

The fourth volume is open, and these are the stories we miss most, because the people who make these changes rarely think to tell anyone. Send us one by 18 September. Someone you know, or your own classroom.

Happy Teachers' Day to everyone doing the nothing much. It has never been nothing.

Ishanikaโ€™s story reflects on how opportunities to experiment, create, and explore ideas shaped the way she experienced learning, while also leaving her wishing for more such opportunities beyond occasional projects and events.

Lakshmi Lali started out as a high school teacher, and later spent twelve years preparing new teachers. Today she is Senior Lecturer at DIET Bangalore Urban. Through it all, she has stayed close to schools, sitting with teachers over lesson plans and asking children what they have really understood.

Our District Program Lead, Naveen Kumar D M, spent time with Lakshmi Ma'am to understand her work more closely, and writes about her journey.
