During August 7-10, 2026, a team from the Foundation for Agrarian Studies (FAS) and Monash University visited Ludhiana, Punjab, as part of the project titled “Dynamics of Agricultural Innovation in North India”, funded by CGIAR – Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA). The team comprised Dr. Gaurav Datt (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Jose María Martínez (Research Fellow) from Monash University, and Dr. Tapas S. Modak (Project Manager) and Kristy Saikia (Research Officer) from FAS.

The visit aimed to inform the design of the 2026–27 field research and refine the survey instruments for household data collection across states. The team conducted semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with farmers, and met with local input dealers and seed producers to understand the ongoing kharif season, key challenges, and the local agricultural innovation and information ecosystem.

Databases constitute an integral part of any research. What are some of the major datasets for studying rural India?

As part of the Young Scholars’ Conclave, this session will explore the different data sources essential to researching India’s rural economy.

The session will feature a special lecture by P. C. Mohanan, Former Acting Chairman, National Statistical Commission, speaking on secondary databases pertaining to the Indian economy, followed by a panel discussion featuring Rosa Abraham, Associate Professor, Azim Premji University, throwing light on employment and labour related data; Arindam Das, Joint Director, Foundation for Agrarian Studies, discussing the Project on Agrarian Relations in India (PARI) database of the Foundation for Agrarian Studies, and Deepak Johnson, Assistant Professor, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), speaking on datasets relevant to the study of agricultural income, yield and input use.

The Young Scholars’ Conclave, a joint initiative of the Foundation for Agrarian Studies and CHRIST (Deemed to be University), will be held from December 2–4, 2026, in Bengaluru.
