Today, we mourn the passing of Saalumarada Thimmakka, a mother to thousands of trees and an inspiration to millions. She nurtured each sapling with the love of a parent and dedicated her entire life to protecting nature. Her simplicity, compassion, and tireless service to the environment will forever remain a guiding light for all of us.

Though she has left this world, her legacy will continue to breathe through every tree she planted and every life she inspired. A true daughter of the soil and a guardian of the earth — we offer our heartfelt respect and salute her extraordinary journey🙏🙏🙏

Role of Shrubs in Forest Ecosystems

Biodiversity support: Shrubs provide shelter, nesting space, and food for birds, insects, and small mammals.

Soil health: Their roots prevent erosion and contribute to organic matter, enriching the soil.

Fire management: Some shrubs act as fire breaks by storing more moisture than grasses.

Succession builders: Shrubs are often the first layer after grasses in ecological succession, paving the way for trees.

Medicinal value: Many forest shrubs (e.g., Lantana camara, Vitex negundo, Clerodendrum) are used in traditional medicine.

Pollinator hubs: They bloom abundantly and for longer periods, sustaining bees and butterflies.

In the Western Ghats, weeds are everywhere — some are native, some are invasive.

Native Weeds

They enrich the soil, provide food for tiny pollinators, and help forests regenerate. Many carry hidden medicinal and ecological value, silently keeping the ecosystem in balance.
 
Invasive Weeds

These spread aggressively, covering vast areas and pushing out native life. While they may offer quick cover or prevent soil erosion, they often disturb the delicate harmony of the forest.

The balance of the Western Ghats depends on understanding both — cherishing the plants that belong while carefully managing those that threaten.

They don’t roar like tigers or soar like eagles—yet seed pollinators quietly keep our forests alive. From bees and butterflies to bats and tiny beetles, these little workers carry the future of our trees in every flight. 🌳🐝🦋

But today, many are on the brink of extinction. 🚨 Loss of habitat, pesticides, and climate change are silencing their buzz and flutter. Without them, forests struggle to regenerate, crops fail to thrive, and biodiversity collapses.

Imagine a forest without flowers, fruits, or seeds. That’s the risk we face if we lose them. 💔

Let’s protect these invisible heroes.
