What happens when a group of pharmacy students steps outside the classroom and into a village where farming is no longer enough to secure a future?

In Nagaiah Gari Palli, Andhra Pradesh, students of Mohan Babu University helped more than 20 families learn how to make bamboo salt — turning a traditional, eco-friendly process into a possible new livelihood.

The project, launched in March 2024, began with a simple challenge: unpredictable rains had made agriculture increasingly uncertain. With a ₹15,000 grant, 60 Pharm D students, guided by their mentors, worked alongside villagers to build a skill that could offer something farming couldn’t always promise: an additional source of income and a little more security.

They learned, together: selecting bamboo, preparing the tubes, filling them with salt, sealing them with clay and roasting them repeatedly. The first batch completed eight successful roasting cycles.

And the impact didn’t stop with the 20 families involved. Through informal learning and shared experience, the initiative has reached an estimated 1,000 people, including neighbouring communities.

That’s what education can look like when it leaves the classroom.
