80th Independence Day celebration: The 4th edition of Satyameva Jayate was celebrated on 14 August 2026 at RBANM’s High School, Ulsoor, Bengaluru, from 5:00 p.m. to midnight.

The programme featured midnight flag hoisting, music, dance, theatre and an exhibition on “The Freedom Struggle in Bengaluru.”

Dhwani Legal Trust put up an interactive stall displaying its postcards, pamphlets and legal-awareness materials.

Visitors were also introduced to the work and initiatives of Dhwani Legal Trust and its efforts towards legal awareness and constitutional values.

As part of the stall activity, visitors were invited to write letters to “Bharata Bhagya Vidata – Dispenser of India’s Destiny” and place them on a large map of India.

Children and adults enthusiastically participated.

Many wrote about their aspirations and hopes for India, while others reflected on the functioning of the system, shared concerns, or expressed their admiration and pride for the country.

The activity provided a meaningful space for people to reflect on India’s future, democracy, citizenship and their role in shaping the nation.

The Karnataka High Court, in M.M. v. State of Karnataka, ruled that non-consummation of marriage and general marital discord do not, by themselves, amount to cruelty under Section 498A of the IPC.

The case concerned a marriage that was not consummated during the four months the couple lived together.

The Court quashed the criminal proceedings, holding that vague allegations cannot convert matrimonial differences into a criminal offence.

It clarified that non-consummation may provide remedies under matrimonial laws, including the Hindu Marriage Act, but does not automatically constitute criminal cruelty.

The ruling highlights the distinction between marital disputes and criminal conduct requiring specific acts of physical or mental harassment.

A panel discussion on “Safe Streets, Shared Cities: Reimagining Urban Spaces for Women and Gendered Minorities” was organised by the Gender Studies Committee, School of Law, Christ (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, on 12 August 2026.

The panel featured Adv. Ashwini Obulesh, Founder-Executive Director, Dhwani Legal Trust and Advocate, High Court of Karnataka; Kavitha Kariappa, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic Division, Bengaluru; and Rajalakshmi R., Learnings & Outcomes Lead, Durga India.

Adv. Ashwini Obulesh was invited as a panelist and she contributed to the panel discussion by highlighting the importance of making public spaces safer and more inclusive for women and gendered minorities.

Drawing from her legal and advocacy experience, she emphasised the need for greater awareness of rights, stronger institutional mechanisms, and effective responses to concerns relating to safety in public spaces.

India’s freedom struggle was shaped by countless brave women and men from every region and community.

From Rani Gaidinliu and Tirot Sing in the Northeast to Alluri Sitarama Raju, Komaram Bheem, Sangolli Rayanna, and Veer Surendra Sai, regional and tribal resistance challenged colonial rule.

Kanaklata Barua, Matangini Hazra, Usha Mehta, Laxman Naik, and Bhogeswari Phukanani played important roles during the Quit India Movement.

Pritilata Waddedar, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Raj Kumari Gupta, and V. O. Chidambaram Pillai carried forward revolutionary and Swadeshi movements.

Their courage, sacrifice, and determination remind us that India’s freedom was built on many voices, struggles, and dreams.

Remember their stories. Honour their courage. ✊

On 7 August 2026, Gandhi Bhavan, Bengaluru, hosted a significant gathering commemorating the 36th anniversary of the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations. This was organised under the leadership of Prof. Ravivarma Kumar.

The programme was attended by Sri Siddaramaiah, former Chief Minister of Karnataka; Sri KM Ramachandrappa, President, Karnataka Backward Classes Federation; Sri Anant Naik, Secretary, Ahinda; Advocate Ashwini Obulesh, Executive Director, Dhwani Legal Trust and other distinguished participants.

Adv Ashwini Obulesh delivered the welcome address, set the context and highlighted reservations as an important instrument for addressing historical and structural inequalities and ensuring meaningful representation.

The discussion emphasised the continuing need for reservations and affirmative action, particularly in addressing disparities in education, employment, institutions of power and decision-making.

A key theme was the need for greater solidarity and collective mobilisation among SC, ST and OBC communities.

The anniversary served not merely as a commemoration, but as an opportunity to renew the commitment to equality, dignity, representation and social justice.

In Dr. Balram Singh v. Union of India, the Supreme Court clarified that reporting “NIL manual scavengers” does not mean that manual sewer or septic-tank cleaning has been eliminated. The Court stressed strict compliance with its earlier guiding directions.

On 27 July 2026, it issued show-cause notices to the Chief Secretaries of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh for failure to comply with the Court’s directions and continuing sewer-cleaning deaths, raising the possibility of contempt proceedings.

On 6th August 2026, The SC/ST and Equal Opportunity Cell of Vidyashilp University, Bengaluru, organised a session on the POSH Act and Caste and Gender Sensitisation for around 150 students.

Adv. Archana from Dhwani Legal Trust introduced the organisation, set the context and facilitated interactive activities.

Adv. Pooja conducted the POSH session, while Adv. Shraddha led the Caste and Gender sensitisation session also a part of Dhwani's Jaa(gru)ti initiavite.

The Court held that employers must provide reasonable accommodation to disabled employees.

The school was directed to reinstate her, pay compensation, and provide necessary facilities under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
