India is the world’s second-largest bamboo producer. And yet, it imports processed bamboo.

The missing piece has always been processing — close to where the bamboo grows, and close to the communities that depend on it.

CM N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for a new bamboo processing unit at Maredumilli, Andhra Pradesh — a development that aligns closely with the work Industree Foundation has been doing on the ground.

Bamboo is one of the core value chains we work with. The evidence is clear — when rural producer communities gain access to the full value chain, not just the harvesting end, the economic outcomes shift meaningfully. Incomes stabilise. Livelihoods diversify. Local enterprise takes root.

Processing infrastructure, placed close to the source, is what makes that possible. It keeps value where the work happens.
Maredumilli has the bamboo and the producer base. This unit is a step towards building the economic infrastructure to match.

Jewel puts it simply: "Just like the roots of bamboo strengthen the soil, the strength of women moves society forward."

She's not speaking in metaphor. She's describing what she sees every day — women who started as smallholder farmers now running processing units, negotiating with buyers, training the next group of growers.

For generations, women have carried the knowledge of how to work with the land — when to harvest, what to protect, how to make a resource last. What's changing is who controls the value that flows from it.

Across the communities we work in, women are moving into every part of the value chain — cultivation, processing, market access, and leadership. Not as participants. As owners.

This Women's Day, read about what rights-centred, climate-resilient value chains actually look like in practice.

An important step towards strengthening Bihar’s bamboo ecosystem.

Amruta Beluse from Industree Foundation participated in the Bihar Bamboo Economy Summit 2026 at Krishi Bhavan, Patna, alongside government leaders, sector experts and key stakeholders working to advance bamboo-based livelihoods in the state.

Hon’ble Agriculture Minister Ram Kripal Yadav, attending as Chief Guest, underscored bamboo’s potential to drive rural employment and sustainable development. The state outlined plans to expand cultivation with structured farmer support and a three-year roadmap covering plantations, nurseries, processing units, Common Facility Centres, FPOs and women-led enterprises.

At the summit, Amruta presented Industree’s demand-led, ecologically sensitive small landholder bamboo plantation model, sharing lessons from seven states and insights on suitable districts and species for Bihar.

The dialogue reflected a clear direction: move beyond raw material to value-added bamboo products, strengthen farmer incomes, and build climate-resilient growth pathways.

What happens when livelihoods are built with time, intent, and accountability?
Impact doesn't always appear straightforward. At times, it may look like stability.
A steady income that grows over time.

Work that respects land instead of exhausting it.

Women who move from doing the work to owning the process.

Through the Industree Foundation × TESCO partnership, these shifts are already taking shape - across farms, workshops, and markets.

Follow us for more updates.
