Bringing Lakshadweep’s Stories of Resilience to Bengaluru
Ashraya Hastha Trust, in partnership with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), hosted the Bengaluru screening and discussion of Ways of Life, a documentary series developed under the Limits to Survival programme.
The event opened with a welcome address by Trustee Asha Dinesh, who highlighted the power of storytelling and films in inspiring change, AHT’s 25-year journey of supporting meaningful initiatives, and the importance of connecting scientific research with the lived experiences of Lakshadweep’s communities.
The event featured the Bengaluru premiere of Onnaam Fira (First Crescent) — a compelling film funded by Ashraya Hastha Trust that captures life in Lakshadweep during Ramadan, illustrating how faith, culture, women’s labour, and seasonal rhythms contribute to both community wellbeing and marine conservation.
A key highlight of the evening was the introduction of the teaser for BILLAM, an upcoming film produced by Ashraya Hastha Trust, offering a glimpse into the next chapter of storytelling on island life and the deep relationship between people and the sea. Participants were also provided with the “El Niño Edition” comic book, developed as part of the initiative, to deepen understanding of climate phenomena and its impact on island ecosystems and communities.
The screenings were followed by an insightful discussion with filmmaker Anand Rama Krishnan, Dr. Rohan Arthur — Scientist, Oceans and Coasts Programme, and Al-Badush — Senior Research Assistant, Oceans and Coasts Programme, reflecting on the importance of culturally rooted, community-led approaches to conservation.
Through the Limits to Survival initiative, Ashraya Hastha Trust remains committed to supporting work that bridges scientific research with lived experiences, demonstrating how sustainability is embedded in everyday practices.
We thank our partners, speakers, and participants for making this event a meaningful platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration.
