The second session of The Bengaluru Debates brought together senior policymakers and public health experts to examine how Bengaluru’s growth is reshaping city systems, and what that means for our everyday health as citizens.

The panelists were () Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka, () Dr. Ashwath Narayan C N, MLA, Malleshwaram and Former Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka, () Dr Shreelata Rao Seshadri, Professor and Director, The Ramalingaswami Centre on Equity and Social Determinants of Health - PHFI, Bangalore, and (.mor) Dr Nachiket Mor, Economist and Health Systems Researcher, moderated by Srikanth Viswanathan.

The conversation looked beyond healthcare to the city itself: how mobility, air quality, water, housing, and public spaces shape health outcomes long before people enter the healthcare system. It also underscored a shared view: public health needs to be treated as a city-wide outcome and not a standalone sector — and that calls for a more coordinated, preventive approach to urban governance.

The formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority was discussed as a potential opportunity to strengthen coordination across institutions and agencies, and to bring public health considerations more systematically into city planning and governance decisions.

As air quality becomes part of everyday conversation, the challenges for cities remain the same: how to move beyond short term fixes toward sustained action.

We hosted a roundtable on ‘Air Pollution in Cities: Challenges and the Way Forward’ in New Delhi to examine what it would take to build coordinated, accountable city systems—and how future air-quality frameworks could be shaped to build city capacity, not just fund them.

This roundtable was a step toward reframing clean air as a city-systems challenge and beginning the work of redesigning for it. Swipe to read key perspectives from experts, researchers, and civil society organisations.

24 years ago, began as a citizens’ movement. It was driven by a belief that people can (and must) shape the cities they call home.

Along the way, we learned that civic participation works best when cities themselves are ready for it — with strong institutions, empowered local governments, and systems that enable change to happen and last.

That learning shaped who we became: an organisation focused on strengthening city-systems by partnering with governments at every level and ensuring that citizens remain at the heart of urban transformation.

With support from everyone who has been part of our journey — communities, city leaders, and ecosystem partners across India, we're building India’s urban future with the same passion and conviction that started it all.
