Many elders in India are victim to abuse and neglect, lacking a source of livelihood to be financially independent. The landmark bill in Telangana, the Telangana Employees' Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, will serve to bring about respite; mandating private and government employees to care for their elderly parents, failing which, they would pay a penalty. Telangana is the first state in India to pass a legislation in eldercare and parental welfare, following in the footsteps of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 enacted by the centre. As an organisation committed to the cause of the elderly, we appreciate this step and hope it inspires other state governments across the country to adopt similar measures.
