Jessy Job started working in Vathsalya in 2000 as a social worker and took a break of a few years to fulfil her personal commitments. She re-joined Vathsalya in 2011 and has since been an irreplaceable part of the trust. Jessy holds a masters in history as well as social work with a diploma in counselling.

Jessy was earlier involved with adoption, placement of the child, court-work, post-placement visits etc and she currently works as the training coordinator. She visits a few villages on the outskirts of Bangalore every month where she trains Asha workers, mothers and children on topics of parenting and nutrition. These Asha workers in turn train the others in their community. Jessy has a way with words and her communication skills combined with her cheerful demeanor enable her to connect to the locals with ease. She likes interacting with the community, migrant families, or parents and actually makes a difference in their lives. Jessy claims that gaining the trust of the community in villages and migrant workers is a major challenge but once that hurdle is taken care of, people are keen on attending workshops for the betterment of their lives. Jessy has even translated an English book on parenting to Kannada and she circulates this in the villages and slums that she works in. Jessy confesses that she finds social work to be emotionally satisfying and fulfilling.

All of four years and a jolly attitude, Ganesh is a cute little boy who is always full of life. But what lies under his facade of enthusiasm is the fact that he is suffering from a kidney disorder. Ganesh’s father works at a construction site and his mother, Sarita is a house maid. They aspire for their son to fulfil their dream of being educated and they want him to grow to be a healthy and good human being. Affordability of medication for Ganesh’s illness is a huge problem for his parents. Vathsalya has been providing him with a lot of nourishment and care and he is a steady learner. Swathi is a sweet, seven-year-old child with special needs at Vathsalya Charitable Trust. She loves to be around people always and offers a gentle hug to strangers as well. Swathi was born with a mental challenge including autism. When she was younger, her parents would tie her to a bedpost and go away to work. The trauma of being tied up has resulted in a physical defence mechanism - she constantly pushes and pulls people - a manner reminiscent of her pushing and pulling the ropes. Her speech impairment is another factor that Vathsalya has been trying to resolve. A speech therapist comes in every week to interact with Swathi. Therapy will hopefully help her to understand and reciprocate to the environment around her. Vathsalya hopes that this environment of positivity around her will bring in the much needed cheer and change she needs.
