This World Hypertension Day, we join the global call for “Controlling Hypertension Together.”

Through CHAMPS (Child Health Activists Mentoring and Promoting Health in Society), an initiative by Biocon Foundation in partnership with Narayana Health and Agastya International Foundation, students of Grades 8 and 9 from government schools are trained to measure blood pressure, understand hypertension risk factors, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage early screening within their communities.

In 2025-2026 :

✅ 100 students trained across 10 government schools
✅ 1,208 adults screened across 18 camps
✅ 323 individuals with elevated BP identified and referred for further evaluation

By empowering young changemakers, CHAMPS is helping bring preventive healthcare closer to communities that need it most.

Now let’s hear from J Priya Deshapande, Shehnaz Banu, and Aishwarya S, participants from BioWISE Cohort 1.
From Raichur, Mysore, and Bangalore Rural, these women are charting their paths in science through internships at IBAB and Biocon, gaining hands-on experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and microbiology.
Through the BioWISE journey, they are strengthening their skills, expanding their exposure to research, and moving closer to their aspirations in the life sciences.
BioWISE is an initiative by Biocon Foundation, in partnership with BeST Bengaluru Science and Technology Cluster and NCBS, empowering women from Tier 2 and 3 institutions through mentorship, lab immersion, industry exposure, and career guidance.

Now let’s hear from Aishwarya G and Kavya S, participants from BioWISE Cohort 1.
From Vijayapura, Aishwarya, daughter of a farmer, is now an MSc Microbiology graduate interning at Biocon, turning her aspirations into action.
Kavya, from Mysore, grew up watching her father run a small tea stall. Today, as an MSc Biotechnology graduate interning at IBAB, she is shaping her path in life sciences with determination.
Through BioWISE, both have gained hands-on exposure, built confidence, and moved closer to their goals.
BioWISE (Bio-Women In STEM Empowered), by Biocon Foundation with BeST Cluster and NCBS, supports women through mentorship, lab immersion, industry exposure, and career guidance.

This Earth Day, rather than celebrate, we want to account for where Biocon Foundation has chosen to act, and why these choices reflect a view about where CSR can do something that neither public budgets nor market incentives currently will.

In the industrial clusters on Bengaluru’s periphery, we are working to strengthen solid waste systems in local bodies that sit outside the ambit of most formal municipal attention. In the same geography, we are studying whether sustainable mobility infrastructure measurably improves public health and reduces pollution exposure, because building is not the same as understanding impact. In peri-urban schools, rainwater harvesting is being used not just to address water insecurity but to build the kind of long-horizon behaviour change that infrastructure alone cannot.

Further south, in Dakshina Kannada, work on urban green cover and coastal mangrove restoration is a deliberate bet on ecological resilience in a geography that is quietly under pressure, from urbanisation, from climate variability, and from the slow erosion of the natural systems that buffer both.

None of these are flagship interventions in the conventional CSR sense. They are attempts to act at the system level, on governance gaps, on data gaps, and on the missing middle between policy intent and ground reality.

The question we carry into another year is whether patient, place-based investment can accumulate into something that shifts baseline conditions, or whether, without policy alignment, it remains consequential but contained.

We don’t have a clean answer. But we think it’s the right question to be asking.

15/04/2026

Let’s listen to R. Anantharaman, CEO, BeST Cluster, and Dr Sreeparna Samanta, Project Manager, BeST Cluster, as they share what motivated BeST Cluster to partner on the BioWISE program and reflect on what it means to be part of BioWISE Cohort 1.
Their insights highlight the power of collaboration in creating inclusive pathways for women to pursue careers in the life sciences.

14/04/2026

Let’s listen to Dr Anupama Shetty, Mission Director, Biocon Foundation, as she shares her perspective on the expected outcomes of BioWISE (Bio-Women In STEM Empowered ) Cohort 1, an initiative by Biocon Foundation, in partnership with BeST Cluster and NCBS, supporting women from Tier 2 and 3 institutions as they transition into impactful careers in the life sciences.

Through mentorship, lab immersion and industry exposure, BioWISE is building a structured pathway for women to thrive as future scientists.

Smiles, science and shared purpose

Here’s a quick sneak peek into the day as Biocon Foundation, in partnership with BeST Cluster and NCBS, officially onboarded the first BioWISE (Bio-Women In STEM Empowered) cohort, welcoming 15 postgraduate women into a transformative journey of scholarship, mentorship and real-world research. In addition,10 undergraduate students are set to join the first cohort of the programme in the coming months.

The onboarding was graced by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon; R. Anantharaman, CEO, BeST Cluster; Dr Anupama Shetty, Mission Director, Biocon Foundation; Naveen Narayanan, Chief Human Resources Officer, Biocon; Deepali Naair, Global Head of Brand and Corporate Communications; Chella Pandian Pitchai, AVP & Global Head- DEI, Biocon; with a virtual address by Dr Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.

Over the past year, our colleagues have had the privilege of volunteering with The Akshaya Patra Foundation — contributing time, energy, and heart to support children’s nutrition and education. From engaging at the Jigani kitchen and nearby schools to hands-on participation at our corporate office, 282 volunteers dedicated 716 hours to advance a shared mission.

These experiences go beyond volunteering — they deepen our understanding of large-scale meal operations, strengthen our connection with the communities we serve, and reinforce our belief that collective action drives real impact.

Thank you to the entire team at Biocon and Akshaya Patra for building a partnership rooted in purpose and compassion. We look forward to many more such meaningful engagements ahead.
