TSA Bengaluru Thadou students' Association, Bengaluru is a broad-based student body for the Thadou in the state of Karnataka. They are one of the largest of the Kuki peoples.

The Thadous (Thadou te) are a tribal people native to north-eastern India, Chin state and Sagaing Division in Burma (Myanmar) and eastern Bangladesh. Thadou is a Kukish language of the Tibeto-Burman family. Thadou is spoken in the different parts of North East India and adjacent portions of Burma and Bangladesh. It was the second language after Meiteilon (Manipuri) in the Manipur state during Brit

ish Colonial Period. In Manipur, the Thadou are mostly found in Churachandpur district, Senapati district, Ukhrul district, South-Western Hills and Sadar Hills, Chandel district and Jiribam. Thadous are known as:

Thadou by the Chins of Myanmar(Burma). Lusuong by the Lushais/Mizos. Khongjai/Khongsai by the Meiteis. Khongchai/Khachami by the Tangkhuls. Kusamei by the Maos. Makheng by the Anals. Thangkumsa by the Kacharis. Kuki/Cuci by the Bengalis. New Kuki by the Britishers. t is believed that Chongthu, the forefather of the Thadous, emerged out from a cave called “Chinlung or Shinlung or Khul” the location of which was believed to be somewhere in Central China, whereas others claimed it to be in Tibet. (Ginzatuang, 1973:5) Mc. Culloch (1857:55).Those ancestors emerging from the cave include Chongthu/Songthu, Khupngam, Vangalpa and some clansmen, leaving behind Noimangpa, Chongja and others of the group. William Shaw’s (1929) description about the origin of Kuki’s is recorded from his collected verbal information. The story goes like this: Noimangpa was the chief of subterranean region. Chongthu, a relative of Noimangpa, while hunting in the jungle with his dog, discovered a large cave. Chongthu, rejoiced at this discovery, gave up his hunting and went back to his village. He conjured up ideas of forming his own village on the earth. Meanwhile, Noimangpa the chief of the underworld was performing the ‘chon’ festival, in which everyone including chongja, the elder brother of Chongthu, Noimangpa’s son Chonkim participated. During this feast Chongthu started waving his sword so vigorously that he injured some of the people present, at which all were annoyed. This action of Chongthu was premeditated so that he can find an excuse to go to the upper world to form a village of his own. When Noimangpa came to know this he wanted Chongthu dead. Chongthu on hearing Noimangpa’s wrath, prepared to leave for the uninhabited earth, ‘khul’, as spoken of by the Thadous. So, Chongja and Chongthu along with the cavemen feasted before their departure. On their journey to the upper crust of the earth there was a great darkness, which lasted for seven days and seven nights, called “Thimzin” by the Thadou’s. They found a stone blocking their passage out and after making many attempts Chongja and party gave up and returned to Noimangpa and reported the result’. Pi Nemneh, wife of Songja, cursed Chongthu and party for leaving them at doom in ‘Khul’. It is also believed that Chongja, Noimangpa and other clansmen who were left behind are assimilated with the Chinese and Japanese people. So, all Thadou people in Bengaluru formed TSA-B as their parent body.

Manipur Proposed To Remove 'Any Kuki Tribes' From ST List. Tribal Affairs Ministry Says...

In 1956, parliament removed 'Any Kuki Tribes' from Manipur's list; in 2002, it returned to ST list after the state's request to the Centre; in 2018, new state cabinet approved deletion of 'Any Kuki Tribes'; for this, it sent a request to Centre in February 2023

The inclusion or exclusion of communities in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list in Manipur "may be kept on hold" due to the "sensitive nature of the prevailing situation" in the state, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs said in response to RTI queries.

CONDEMNATION
28th September, 2025

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) strongly condemns the malicious post on "UNITED KUKILAND of INDIA" WhatsApp channel targeting the Thadou community, our Hun Festival, and even the Thadou Baptist Association, Keithelmanbi Youth Department’s community service of cleaning the Kangpokpi District Hospital campus.

This is yet another attempt by Kuki supremacist and extremist groups, backed by militants, to suppress and erase the Thadou identity.

URL Link: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VazxaGbA89MZG4BvED13/2640

Let it be loud and clear: Thadou are NOT Kuki, and Kuki has NO control over Thadou. Both Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) and TSA have consistently rejected this false narrative and will continue to defend our distinct identity and cultural rights.
We urge and to take immediate cognizance of this divisive propaganda and hold those responsible accountable before it escalates tensions further.
We will celebrate our Hun Festival, serve our community, and protect our heritage, without fear, without apology.

Our message: Live and let live. Stop targeting the Thadou people, your hate only makes us stronger.

Thadou will never be subdued.

We also wish a speedy recovery to the five injured personnel and civilians.

TSA strongly condemns this heinous act of terrorism and demands that the perpetrators be brought to justice at the earliest. Violence has no place in society, and such incidents only derail the fragile peace process in Manipur.

TSA stands in solidarity with the Armed Forces, the bereaved families, and the people of Manipur.

TSA Condemns Attack on Farmer and Killing of Mrs. Hoikholhing Haokip; Demands Immediate Judicial Probe

MEDIA RELEASE
Friday, the 20th June, 2025

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) strongly condemns the recent act of violence at Phubala, Bishnupur District, which left a local farmer Ningthoujam Biren Singh of Phubala Awang Maning Leikai, Bishnupur district was shot injured in the paddy field and resulted in the tragic killing of Mrs. Hoikholhing Haokip, a civilian and the wife of the village chief of Langchingmanbi, Kangvai Sub-Division, Churachandpur district during the retaliatory operation by security forces. Mrs. Hoikholhing was allegedly shot point-blank, an act that, if proven true, constitutes a grave violation of human rights and may amount to a fake encounter.

TSA expresses deep sorrow and solidarity with the family of the deceased and the injured. We also raise serious concern over the continued militarization of civilian zones, which endangers innocent lives even after the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur since February 2025. This situation not only undermines the sovereignty of the Indian state, but also calls into question the integrity of the security forces and the effectiveness of the President’s Rule under the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, who is presently overseeing the state government. The softness of state response has shaken public confidence and contributed to a growing loss of hope in the government’s ability to safeguard its own citizens.

In response to these grave concerns, the Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) appeals to the State Government to:
1. Constitute a time-bound judicial inquiry into the twin incidents; and if necessary, hand over the case to a neutral central agency such as the NIA or CBI for an impartial, independent and transparent investigation;
2. Ensure accountability of the security personnel involved, with suspension pending investigation and conduct an immediate security review to ensure the protection of farmers and civilians, especially in conflict-prone zones; and
3. Provide fair compensation and medical care to the victims and their families.

TSA also appeals to all communities to maintain peace and unity. We also caution the public and the media against circulating unverified information that could incite further unrest.

We reiterate our firm commitment to justice, peace, and the protection of human rights for all communities in Manipur.

Statement: "Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki.
