"The Substance" (2024)

“Lay down some tarp, because there’s going to be a lot of blood.” ~ Thierry Frémaux

2024 Award for Best Screenplay - Festival de Cannes Festival de Cannes

"It’s about beauty. It’s about success. Taking it out of reality was a way to make it timeless and thus universal, like the story could happen today, yesterday, or tomorrow—as well as anywhere. I wanted the locations and set decorations to have a very strong symbolic meaning."
~ Coralie Fargeat , Director, Vogue

"With sharp wit and cathartic intensity, Coralie Fargeat turns toxic beauty culture inside out in her mind-blowing latest feature. Powered by a career-best performance from Demi Moore, The Substance fearlessly bulldozes its way into the midnight-movie pantheon and the feminist canon."
~ MUBI

"For a movie that won Best Screenplay at Cannes, it relies too much on its performances and style to make up for writing that, well, lacks in substance."
~ Drew Gregory, autostraddle

"The Substance will test your stomach (and your patience) but it’s all worth it! Demi Moore is riveting and Coralie Fargeat’s script is a dark, satirical phantasmagoria."
~Kristen Lopez, Kristomania

BCIFF Showcase: 'In the belly of the tiger' (2024)

“Speaking to the soul of India, my film uses Indian mythology as a signal of hope to tell a deeply personal love story designed to put these invisible lives at the center of human consciousness,”
~ Jatla Siddartha, the director

'In the belly of the tiger' (2024)
"Caught between real events and the magical lotus blossoms from the belly of Lord Vishnu, Siddartha Jatla’s film is a poignant critique of capitalism."
~ Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival

"This conundrum emanates from the story of a man who offers himself up to a hungry tiger if it means being able to feed his family, a tale Jatla uses to scrutinize the machineries of injustice."
~ Siddhant Adlakha, Variety Magazine

"Bowing in the Berlinale’s independently curated Forum programme, 'In the Belly of a Tiger', combines social critique with magical realism to depict the struggles of India's rural poor."
~ Clarence Tsui, The Film Verdict

"The film questions the value of animal lives vs human lives, highlighting the struggles of forest-dwelling people and addressing poverty issues." ~ Geothe-Institut

After a long hiatus & frank feedback from you all, we are back with a much focussed approach.

We have been working for the past few months on reviving our mission and we restart first with the launch of an online film magazine.

The magazine is an outlet to explore international film festivals & films that are on the fringes of what is acceptable.

Our blog bciff.wordpress.com/blog is also being revived with new articles from our own cinephiles. Be sure to check it out.

Through this we aim to revive challenging conversations & discussions among cinephiles.

We want you to join us again on this journey into the heart of storytelling. Participate with us through your comments, emails & messages.

Sincerly, BCIFF Team 🙏🏻
