Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust

Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust PNLIT is a not-for-profit charitable trust that has been involved in the restoration of Puttenahalli Lake, along with the BBMP. BNG(U)-JPN-129/2010-11.

The lake has been formally handed over to PNLIT for maintenance and nurturing. Puttenahalli 'kere' - Puttakere lies between Puttenahalli in JP Nagar VII Phase and Lakshmi Layout, between the north west boundary of L & T South City apartments and in front of the Brigade Millennium residential complexes. Once a fairly large water body that used to attract various kinds of birds, it became more of a

dumping ground for waste and debris generated from the adjoining houses and a slum that was growing as rapidly as the kere was shrinking. Thanks to the efforts of few committed citizens of the neighborhood, this lake was put on the BBMP's list of 28 lakes to be revived. Now it is home to over 113 species of water and land birds, 50+ species butterflies and many spiders and insects. Over 400+ trees , shrubs and climbers have been planted around the periphery of the lake which teems with fish, crabs, water snakes, etc. In short, the lake is natural world in a microcosm, a sanctuary in the middle of a concrete urban jungle, a bird-watcher's delight in the heart of human habitation! In June 2010, Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT) was registered under the Indian Trust Act of the Government of Karnataka - Regn No.

Helping Children Discover Bengaluru’s Lakes – A New Book from PNLIT

We are happy to share that PNLIT will soon be bringing out an illustrated children’s book about Bengaluru’s lakes, authored by PNLIT trustee Arathi Manay.

Creating awareness about lakes and urban water is an important part of the Trust’s work, and this book has been supported using funds earmarked for awareness-building initiatives.

Aimed at children aged 8–11, it introduces young readers to how Bengaluru’s lakes were created, how they were connected to capture and store rainwater, and why they remain so important to the city even today. With simple explanations and engaging illustrations, it helps children understand and appreciate this remarkable water system. The book is possibly among the first children’s books to introduce Bengaluru’s historic lake network to young readers.

We plan to release the book in early April, and copies will be available shortly thereafter.

If you would like to receive a copy and/or know of a school, library, or group of children who may benefit from it, please fill in the link below.

Greetings to you and your family for the new year. We are happy to report that Puttenahalli Puttakere continues to thrive. Our struggle in 2024 to sustain and more importantly to protect, the lake was another story, best summed up as, "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hum honge kamyaab/We shall overcome ... hopefully in 2025!
