Remembering Swami Dayanand Saraswati on His Jayanti
Born on February 12, 1824, Swami Dayanand Saraswati was a visionary reformer who ignited a movement for truth, education, and social justice. He fearlessly challenged social evils like child marriage, caste discrimination, and animal sacrifice, advocating for women's rights and rational thought. In 1876, he gave the call for Swaraj—India for Indians—planting the seeds of independence long before it became a national movement. As the founder of the Arya Samaj, he championed Vedic knowledge and universal brotherhood. His teachings remain as relevant today as they were in the 19th century.
In his book Satyarth Prakash (The Light of Truth), he emphasized self-governance and independence from British rule.
Though his ideas did not immediately translate into a mass political movement, they influenced later leaders, including Lokmanya Tilak, who popularized Swaraj is my birthright in the early 20th century.
Let’s honor his legacy by striving for a society built on truth, equality, and education.
