🎨 Artwork Feature: "Use and abuse of Rivers"

-- Colour Pencil on Paper by Anahi

"Legend says that the Goddess Kaveri descended onto Earth with a life’s desire to serve. And so she does. Like a mother, the river gives, unconditionally. Along her course, her waters carve the landscape into a home – fostering animals, plants, and people alike.
But while there is use, there is also abuse. In Bangalore, the disconnect between residents and the precious water they consume leads to the Kaveri’s exploitation. Where value is forgotten, resources are mistreated – a river born to flow freely is restrained by anthropogenic action. A tragic fate suffered by countless rivers across Bangalore, India, and the world today."

Anahi joined Paani.Earth as Intern for a short duration. This thought-provoking and beautiful piece by her was inspired by Paani.Earth's work on the Rivers of Bengaluru. 🌿

Let's remember the importance of protecting our water bodies, not just for ourselves but for future generations.

The MOEF draft notification permits new hydroelectric projects in ESAs with conditions that may be difficult to enforce.

Commissioned Hydropower Projects (2023-24) in Western Ghats, Karnataka: 3704.365 MW

With nearly 3.7 GW of hydroelectric power generating projects already in this fragile region, can the Western Ghats sustain more hydroelectric projects?

Take Action:
Email to [email protected] by 27th Sep 2024 to urge the MOEF to impose a moratorium on new hydroelectric projects until the impact of existing projects on this fragile ecoregion is fully assessed.

Update: Respond to MoEF’s 6th Draft Notification on Western Ghats Conservation

Dear Concerned Citizen,

On September 24th, we shared a general draft letter titled "Letter to MoEF_General" that could be personalized and sent to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF) in response to the 6th draft notification regarding the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA).

Following valuable public feedback, we have now created another version of the response, addressing two key points:
7. Sand Mining
8. Stone Quarrying

In Version 1, we proposed a phased approach toward curbing, regulating, and eventually banning these activities in the ESA. However, Version 2 (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/r8muplojnuhc2vox1szzy/Letter-to-MOEF_General_Quarry-Ban.docx?rlkey=cfv6zz49e9ai5lt7zqppif93n&dl=0) welcomes the proposed complete ban on both sand mining and stone quarrying.

You are encouraged to review both versions and select the one that aligns with your position.

To facilitate your participation, here is version 2 "Letter to MoEF_General_Quarry Ban (https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/r8muplojnuhc2vox1szzy/Letter-to-MOEF_General_Quarry-Ban.docx?rlkey=cfv6zz49e9ai5lt7zqppif93n&dl=0)" which can also be personalized before sending to MoEF. Every individual response is critical to ensuring the long-term protection of the Western Ghats.

Every response counts, and your participation is crucial in ensuring the long-term protection of the Western Ghats.

Please send the email to [email protected] (MoEF&CC) by this Friday, September 27th.

Together, we can make a difference.

🌿 Understanding the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) Draft Notification 🌿

On July 31st, 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF) released a draft notification regarding the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area.

Despite conditions being imposed on "Building and construction" and "Townships and Development projects," the loopholes in the notification could essentially turn it into a freeway for unchecked destruction. Large-scale projects, including buildings comparable in scale to Rashtrapathi Bhavan and resorts like the Mahindra properties in Madikeri, can still be built in the Eco-sensitive area!!

This is a key concern and needs to be objected to!

We have until September 28th to submit any objections or suggestions to MoEF.

📄 You can read the entire notification [https://moef.gov.in/storage/tender/1723024218.pdf]. Though it's a long document, the core information is covered in the first four pages, with subsequent pages detailing the latitude, longitude, and list of villages. You can find the Hindi version on page 01 and the English version on page 151.

Let's ensure the voices of those living in and caring about the Western Ghats are heard! 🌱

🌿 Understanding the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) Draft Notification 🌿

On July 31st, 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF) released a draft notification regarding the Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area. But what does it mean when a village is notified as an ESA? 🤔

In simple terms, certain activities in these areas are either prohibited or regulated to protect the fragile ecosystems of the Western Ghats. To make this information accessible to everyone, we’re working on breaking down the notification in an easy-to-understand format.

We have until September 28th to submit any objections or suggestions to MoEF.

📄 You can read the entire notification on the MoEF website here [https://moef.gov.in/storage/tender/1723024218.pdf]. Though it's a long document, the core information is covered in the first four pages, with subsequent pages detailing the latitude, longitude, and list of villages.
