Skills over degrees?

Mohammed Toufiq Pasha, once thought dropping out of his undergraduate degree meant his options had narrowed.

Things began to shift when he started using the MyQuest App during his time at the Association for Promoting Social Action. Through the MyQuest app, he began exploring opportunities across sectors, learning employability skills, and understanding how industries and careers are changing.

In his experience, skills matter more than degrees. Not just technical skills, but communication, adaptability, confidence, and the ability to keep learning.

Young people can navigate careers and thrive when they have access to the right tools, guidance, and opportunities to learn.

What changes when learners feel like their experiences belong in classrooms?
Rekha, a learner from the Vasava Tribe in Gujarat, already carried knowledge about water, health, and farming from her community

With support from her teacher and access to hands-on learning tools, she began participating more in class and creating digital stories rooted in her lived experiences.

When teacher support meets 21st-century skills, not only do learners build, they report better well-being too.

Can schools be community led?

The Ministry of Education’s new School Management Committees (SMCs) guidelines are pushing for something important: schools shaped not just by institutions, but by communities too.

Parents. Local voices. Representation. Participation.

But what does that actually mean?

Neha Parti, Director - Schools Program at Quest Alliance, shares her thoughts on why this could be a meaningful shift - if implementation keeps learners and schools at the center.

“Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will change everything.”

At the Quest 2 Learn Summit 2025, keynote speaker Amba Kak, Co-Executive Director of the AI Now Institute, unpacked how conversations around AGI are shaping the future of work, technology, and opportunity itself.

But the bigger question remains: Who gets to shape AI? Who benefits from it? And whose realities are missing from these conversations altogether?

Because an AI-driven future must not be built for young people, it must be built with young people.

And the Youth Charter outlines what they have to say. Link in our bio.

“What AI tools do you use the most?” At the Quest Learning ...

“What AI tools do you use the most?”

At the Quest Learning Observatory last week, the LinkedIn team sat down with six IndustriaI Training Institution (ITI) learners from Hubli, Karnataka.

The learners, all part of a LinkedIn-supported program, shared how tools like MyQuest, ChatGPT, and LinkedIn help them to explore careers, prepare for interviews, and navigate their learning journeys.

Moving beyond technology, the learners also talked about their aspirations and what they think young people need to build thriving careers today.

The visit also offered the LinkedIn team to explore Quest Alliance’s work with young people, alongside more conversations on the LinkedIn-Quest Alliance partnership, AI and the future of work.

As work and technology continue to evolve, spaces like these are necessary to empower young people to connect with industry, build confidence, and thrive.

From a classroom in the Tadvi tribal community in Narmada, Gujarat, Raju went from seeing science as just “something on TV” to building a safety system because of a personal experience.

The National Education Policy 2020 encourages that learning goes beyond the curriculum - towards real-world thinking and 21st-century skills.

Through Quest Alliance’s work in schools, teachers were trained to create inclusive classrooms and exploratory spaces like hackathons - where learners can ask questions, and build things.

This not only built Raju's confidence and well-being, but also inspired him to build two safety systems for his community!

As the world of work evolves, young people today are building futures that don’t fit into just one box.

From learning through YouTube and technology to exploring careers beyond the traditional path, Host Nikita Bengani , and guests - Chandana Barman and Jai Basyal speak about what it means to navigate ambition, uncertainty, creativity, and work in this day and age.

At Quest Alliance, we believe future skilling begins with listening to young people, valuing their lived experiences, and creating pathways that help them thrive on their own terms.

For Alpesh Parmar, finding the right path wasn’t immediate. After working several jobs, he was looking for something more stable - that’s when he chose to enrol at the Vasad Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Gujarat.

As an Attendant Operator Chemical Plant (AOCP), beyond technical learning, he found himself building skills that went further - communication, confidence, and the ability to navigate the workplace.

With access to tools like the MyQuest app, Alpesh could explore job opportunities, apply for roles, and prepare through workshops that supported his job search.
Vocational education isn’t just about learning a trade, it’s about building skills that stay with you, shaping how you work, grow, and move forward in life.

Can a school-going student from one of India’s tribal belts go from surviving to thriving if 21st-century skills are taught in inclusive classrooms?

In 2020, the National Education Policy sought to reimagine India’s education system towards “building character, creating holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with the key 21st-century skills.”

The policy, however, is mum on just how schools can achieve this.

Quest took a crack - introducing teacher-led, app-based interventions to introduce 21st-century skills in classrooms across India.

But a result that was not on our radar - in the tribal belt of Gujarat, in classrooms where teachers made an effort to connect with students when imparting 21st-century skills…students went from surviving to thriving!

Arbiya, a Grade 9 student from Hoskote, Karnataka, is guided by curiosity and a willingness to experiment to build solutions for her community - already building solutions for her community!

From making a rainwater harvesting system for her grandmother’s home to designing a low-cost stairlift for elderly neighbours, Arbiya illustrates that learning can go beyond textbooks.

With access to the right tools and classrooms that explore, learners can build skills like problem-solving, adaptability, communication, and real-world application early on.

These are the kinds of future skills that don’t just support education but also shape how the young people navigate their work and life.
