Empowering mothers and nurturing smiles! 🤱💕

World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated at our Unit by a demonstration and presentation on the importance of breast milk feeding for mothers of children less than 3 months of age.

Our Nutritionist presented in detail the various aspects of breast milk feeding for children with cleft explaining the importance of expressing milk and feeding if direct breastfeeding was not feasible as is in most cases. The role of the father and family’s support was stressed upon to encourage them to lend a hand in feeding the child thereby reducing the mother’s stress of being solely responsible for the same.

One of the mother’s who is exclusively breastfeeding her child with cleft was called upon to share her experience and encourage other mother’s to express and feed similarly.

This was followed by a demonstration of how to express milk from the breast, using models that were given to each mother to practice the right manner of expression.

A meal rich in galactogogues was served to each parent who attended the programme.

Breastfeeding Week at CLC, Smile Train was all about promoting health, happiness, and the beautiful bond between mother and child.

Dr Dipesh Rao is a Dually Qualified (Medically and Dentally trained) Maxillofacial surgeon. He was one of our first fellows and joined back as one of our three Surgical Consultants at the Unit after furthering his training.

Globally, only a few surgeons have the privilege of training in Paediatric Maxillofacial Surgery and Craniofacial Surgery, and Dr. Dipesh is one of them.

He did his Paediatric Maxillofacial fellowship at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. It is here he gained knowledge of Orthognathic surgery, Paediatric OMS and Complex craniomaxillofacial distractions and has carried it forward in his practice here in India.

He furthered his training by pursuing a Royal College of Surgery-supported fellowship at the Oxford Craniofacial Unit. The Oxford Craniofacial Unit is world-renowned for its pioneering work in Craniofacial surgery and its well-integrated multidisciplinary practice.

To date, you can hear him speak about the tremendous influence these three fellowships have had on him.

Dr. Rao's spectrum of work includes cleft lip and palate deformity, syndromic and non-syndromic craniosynostosis (fusion of skull growing lines), complex facial deformity requiring orthognathic correction and distraction osteogenesis.

Dr Rao prefers to keep the child at the apex and the doctor and parents at the base to form an interlinked 'relationship triangle' providng care from antenatal diagnosis to adulthood.

He dreams of a world where every child born with a facial deformity can explore their full potential and lead a life without social stigmas.

He is a wildlife photographer by avocation and his photos have received global acclaim

Yeah Yeah!!

🤰🏻Nourishing Love, One feed at a Time 🍼

During Breast Awareness Week, we at Smile Train CLC, BMJH, Bangalore celebrate the strength and love shared by moms and children with clefts.
Together, we nourish and support every little smile, proving that no challenge is too big for a mother's bond.
🥛While direct breast feeding may not be the most plausible option, breast milk feeding is what we propagate for our children with cleft.

Cleft Lip Palate is a congenital defect. Congenital means the defect is present from birth.

The presence of this defect can be diagnosed from antenatal scans between 12th - 20th week of pregnancy.

A cleft lip is detected more easily than a cleft palate.

Early diagnosis facilitates preparedness of the parents and family and allows for early intervention after birth.

Together, let's break barriers, erase stigma, and shine a light on the strength and beauty of every unique smile.
