Last week we created a playful Mini Economy setup to help children understand the basics of financial literacy — earning, saving, spending and managing money in everyday life.
The activity included a dummy bank setup with account opening, deposit, withdrawal, and loan counters, along with simplified forms, cheque leaves, and deposit slips. Children played various roles like bank manager, cashier and loan officer; they also did record keeping.
We also created:
~ An office setup featuring IT professionals
~ vegetable and stationery/toy shops where children practiced buying and selling
Interestingly, we also had a scenario, where one of our junior vegetable vendors went bankrupt due to overspending, leading to a thoughtful discussion with the bank manager 😊
It was amazing to see how children were engaged in decision making and trying to solve the problems on their own, while also learning teamwork, communication, interpersonal skills, accountability, simple maths, money handling, depositing-withdrawing cash, borrowing money and buying-selling process.
The Mini Economy play gave children a hands-on understanding of how the world around them functions, in a fun and engaging way
