Many lives have been lost and thousands have been rendered homeless in the ensuing violence. The Meitei diaspora residing in the state of Karnataka felt an urgent urge to step-in and provide some sort of humanitarian assistance to our unfortunate fellow citizens in Manipur. Like minded individuals of Meitei brothers and sisters in Karnataka came together and informally organized themselves as a group and started to contribute and arrange for these humanitarian aids. The members started to meet regularly and discussed the need to establish a formal association to continue our social efforts. Moreover, since our activities also involve monetary contribution, we needed to make our activities more transparent and comply with the authorities. As a continuation of our pursuance, Karnataka Meitei Association (KMA) became a formal and registered body under Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960 (Karnataka No. 17 of 1960 Act) on 11th July 2023 vied registration number DRB3/SOR/176/2023-2024. An executive governing body was elected and a core committee was constituted as per the guidelines. The group vows to mobilize the masses in an effort to continue with the humanitarian activities. Apart, we are also making strides to chart out activities for the welfare of Meitei expatriates in Karnataka and our people back in our homeland. The body plans to organize events and gatherings as deemed necessary in the course of time. Transparency and commitment of the members remains a core quality of the association.

KMA Observes Patriots’ Day with a Powerful Message of Unity and Peace for Manipur in Bangalore

Bengaluru, 13 August 2026: The Karnataka Meitei Association (KMA) successfully observed Patriots’ Day (Athouba Singgi Numit) 2026 in Bengaluru with a strong message of unity, peace and hope for Manipur. The programme was held under the theme “Honouring the Patriots, Renewing Our Commitment Towards a Peaceful and United Manipur.”
The programme was graced by Ms. Irom Chanu Sharmila, the Iron Lady of Manipur, as the Chief Guest. Sir Rajesh A.M., IFS, Liaison Officer, Government of Manipur, was among the special invitees, along with distinguished guests and community representatives from across Manipur.
A particularly significant feature of this year’s observation was the participation of people from almost all major communities of Manipur, including Meitei, Meitei Pangal, Tangkhul, Rongmei, A**l, Zeliangrong, Mao, Poumai, Tarao and others. Their presence made the occasion a meaningful reflection of Manipur’s rich diversity and the shared bonds that connect its people.
As part of the tribute, more than 20 freedom fighters from both the hills and the valley, who fought against British rule, were remembered through a floral tribute. The programme commenced with the floral offering, followed by inspiring addresses, children’s programmes and cultural presentations celebrating the heritage and spirit of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, Subhas Takhellambam, President of KMA, said: “We observe Patriots’ Day every year, but this year’s observance was particularly special because of its theme and the coming together of people from different communities. We had the joy and privilege of honouring our fallen heroes together and spending the morning in friendship and fellowship. It was truly heartening to see our people come together in this spirit.”
He further said that the present circumstances in Manipur make such efforts even more important. “We firmly believe that lasting peace in Manipur can only come when all the communities inhabiting the state learn to coexist peacefully and interdependently. As a diaspora, we have a responsibility to keep our bonds alive, meet one another, understand each other and contribute towards building trust and hope.”
KMA expressed its gratitude to all the distinguished guests, community representatives and members of the Manipuri diaspora who participated in making the observation a meaningful and memorable occasion.
