ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ಥಳನಾಮಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಗಳು: ಭಾಗ 20 – ಯಲಹಂಕ

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಯಲಹಂಕ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಒಂದು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಹಾಗೂ ಸುದೀರ್ಘವಾದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ.

ಯಲಹಂಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ವಿವಿಧ ಶಾಸನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 'ಇಲೈಪಾಕ್ಕ', 'ಎಲಹ್ಕ' ಹಾಗೂ 'ಯಲಹಕ' ಎಂದು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಇಂದಿನ ಯಲಹಂಕವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುತ್ತವೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಕಾಲಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹೇಗೆ ರೂಪಾಂತರವಾಗಿ ಇಂದಿನ ಯಲಹಂಕ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ನಿದರ್ಶನಗಳಾಗಿವೆ.

ಯಲಹಂಕ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಹತ್ತಾರು ಶಾಸನಗಳು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವು, ದೇವನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಸಮೀಪದ ಗಂಗವಾರ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಸಾ.ಶ.1046 ರ ಒಂದು ತಮಿಳು ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಲಹಂಕವನ್ನು 'ಇಲೈಪಾಕ್ಕ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದರಿಂದ ಯಲಹಂಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಸುಮಾರು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕವಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

ಈ ಶಾಸನವು, ಚೋಳ ಅರಸ ಒಂದನೇ ರಾಜರಾಜ ಚೋಳನ 29ನೇ ವರ್ಷದ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ಈತನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಲಂಕಾದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ದಿಗ್ವಿಜಯಗಳನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸಾಲುಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಒಂದು ದೇವರ ಹಬ್ಬಕ್ಕಾಗಿ 'ಮನ್ನಿಯಸಾರಿ' ಎಂಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗೆ ದಾನ ನೀಡಿದ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ನಿರ್ಧಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಇದು ಯಾವ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಹಬ್ಬ ಎಂಬುದು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಈ ದಾನವು "ಸೂರ್ಯ-ಚಂದ್ರರು ಇರುವವರೆಗೂ" ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದು ಶಾಸನದ ಆಶಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಗಂಗವಾರದ ಸಾ.ಶ.1046 ರ ತಮಿಳು ಶಾಸನದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, 'ಇಲೈಪಾಕ್ಕ' (ಇಂದಿನ ಯಲಹಂಕ) ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಕೆತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಗಂಗವಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಯಲಹಂಕ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನತೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಜೀವಂತ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.

Earliest Records of Locality Names in Bengaluru: Part 20 – Yelahanka 🕰📜

Yelahanka in Bengaluru North is today one of the city's prominent localities, with a recorded history spanning nearly a millennium.

The locality is mentioned in inscriptions as Ilaipakka and Yelahaka, all of which correspond to present-day Yelahanka and show how the name evolved over time.

The earliest known inscribed reference to Yelahanka appears in a Tamil inscription from Gangavara, near Devanahalli. Dated to 1046 CE, the inscription records the place name Ilaipakka, offering the earliest written records associated with the locality and placing it within the administrative framework of that period.

The text opens with elaborate royal praise celebrating the military victories of Rajadhiraja Chola I across South India and Sri Lanka, marking his 29th regnal year in 1046 CE.

The inscription records a charitable grant made by local officials and Brahmins for a festival of the goddess. While the specific names of the deity and the festival are missing, the endowment was made in favour of a person named Manniyasari and was intended to endure "as long as the moon and the sun."

The images show 3D digital scans of the Gangavara inscription, where the name Ilaipakka is etched in stone, serving as a permanent record of the area's heritage.

Abstract of the Talk:
In the eleventh century, government officials and courtiers in Karnataka started doing something novel: They turned to a language they called “New Kannada” to compose texts that systematically interrogated the activities of everyday life. Using this new linguistic register, they wrote about how to predict the weather, locate water underground, assay gold, compute compound interest, counteract poisons, and heal wounds. This talk explores such “everyday sciences” that were developed in the Western Cāḷukya court and their afterlives in the centuries to follow.

ಈ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಒಂದು ಜೀವಂತ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಕೆಲವು ವಿಶೇಷ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳಿಗೆ ಪೂಜೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಂದರೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷ ಸಂಕ್ರಾಂತಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ದನಕರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಲಂಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿ, ಬಸವೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಬಳಿ ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ, ಕಿಚ್ಚು ಹಾಯಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ (ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಜಿಗಿಸುವುದು). ನಂತರ ಆ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ತೀರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋಕ್ಷಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ಪೂಜೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಪ್ರತೀ ವರ್ಷ ನಡೆಯುವ ಒಂದು ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಆಚರಣೆ.

ಈ ಕಲ್ಲು ನಮ್ಮ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ತಂದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ: ನಮ್ಮ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಹಾಗೂ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಭಾಗವಾದ ಇದನ್ನು, ಯಾವುದೋ ಒಂದು ದೂರದ ವಸ್ತು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಿಸಬೇಕೇ ? ಅಥವಾ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರ ಸಹಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅದು ಎಲ್ಲಿದಿಯೋ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಬೇಕೇ?

Today, Hebbal is famous for its flyovers and upscale areas like Dollars Colony, Anand Nagar, and RT Nagar. But its real heart lies in the original Hebbal village. When locals learned their village was documented as Perboḷal in an 8th-century inscription, everything changed.

For years, this historic hero stone—known locally as gorkal (cattle-stones)—lay half-buried in a dirty ditch. Moved by their history, residents Patel Srinivas and Shankara stepped up to clean and lift them out of the dirt.

These stones are part of a living culture. During the annual Sankranti festival, the village cattle are decorated and gathered near the Basaveshwara Temple. First, they are made to jump over a bonfire. Only then is holy water (tirtha) sprinkled on the stones for worship.

This brings us to a major question: should our history be moved to a distant museum, or preserved right where it belongs, with the community?

ಎರೆಯಂಗ ವಾದರಗ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ವೀರ. ಈತನ ಸಾಹಸ ಗಾಥೆಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಆಗ್ನೇಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಕೈಕೊಂಡ್ರಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಾ.ಶ.900ರ ಕಾಲದ ಒಂದು ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನವು, ಊರನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡಲು (ಊರಳಿವು) ಬಂದ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ವಿರುದ್ಧ, ಎರೆಯಂಗ ವಾದರಗ ಎಂಬ ವೀರನು ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ವೀರ ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈತನ ವೀರ ಮರಣದ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ, ಇವನ ಮಗ ಮಾರಸಿಂಘ ವಾದರಗನು ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯೂ ಈ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕಣ್ನಿಲಿ (ಇಂದಿನ ಕನ್ನೇಲಿ) ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ನಾಗತ್ತರನ ಅಧೀನದಲ್ಲಿ, ಎರೆಯಮ್ಮ ಗಾವುಂಡನು ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಈ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ 'ಊರಳಿವು' ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದ್ದು ಇದನ್ನು, ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಊರನ್ನು (ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪಟ್ಟಣ) ನಾಶಮಾಡಲು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು ಭೀಕರ ದಾಳಿ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಆಸಕ್ತಿಕರ ಸಂಗತಿಯು ಕಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದೇನೆಂದರೆ, ವೀರನ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತೂಗು ಹಾಕಿದಂತೆ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಚೀಲದ ಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಅಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವೀಳ್ಯದೆಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ಯಲು ಬಳಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೈನಿಕರ ಪತ್ನಿಯರು, ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯನ್ನು ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿಕೊಡುವಾಗ ರಣವೀಳ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಹರಸಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂದಿಗೂ ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದಂತಹ ಅತಿಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ವೀಳ್ಯದೆಲೆ (ತಾಂಬೂಲ) ನೀಡುವ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯವಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಹೇಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಪರಂಪರೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಾಸು ಹೊಕ್ಕಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಶಿಲ್ಪವು ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ನಿದರ್ಶನವಾಗಿದೆ.

1200 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಒಂದು ಭೀಕರ ಯುದ್ಧ, ಧಾವಿಸಿ ಬಂದ ಆಕ್ರಮಣಕಾರಿ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಈ ದಾಳಿಕೋರರಿಗೆ ಎದೆಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹೋರಾಡಿದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಪ್ರಜೆ - ಕಿತ್ತಯ್ಯ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಾದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಶೌರ್ಯದ ಕಥೆಯ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ನಾಯಕನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮುಖಾಮುಖಿ.

ಈ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ತರುವ ತನ್ನ ಪಯಣವನ್ನು 'ಟೈಮ್‌ಕ್ರಾಫ್ಟ್ ಸ್ಟುಡಿಯೋ' (Timecraft Studio), ಈ ವಿಡಿಯೋ ಸರಣಿ ಮೂಲಕ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದೆ.

ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕನೇ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉದಯ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಪಿ.ಎಲ್ ಅವರು, ಕಿತ್ತಯ್ಯನ ವೀರಗಾಥೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಬ್ಬಾಳವನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಈತನು ನಡೆಸಿದ ಅವಿಸ್ಮರಣೀಯ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಷವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ರಟ್ಟವಾಡಿಗಳು (ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಕೂಟರು) ಹೆಬ್ಬಾಳದ (ಅಂದಿನ ಪೆರ್ಬೊಳಲ್) ಮೇಲೆ ಭೀಕರ ದಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಇಡೀ ಪಟ್ಟಣವನ್ನು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಧ್ವಂಸ ಮಾಡುವುದೇ ಅವರ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಅಂತಹ ಭೀಕರ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವ ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಓಡಿ ಹೋಗಿರಬಹುದು. ಆದರೆ, ಕಿತ್ತಯ್ಯ ಮಾತ್ರ ತನ್ನ ಜಾಗದಿಂದ ಕದಲದೇ, ಶತ್ರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಎದೆಕೊಟ್ಟು ನಿಂತನು. ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸೈನ್ಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ಹೆಬ್ಬಾಳವು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ನಾಶವಾಗದಂತೆ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು. ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಈ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೇ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದನು.

ಅವನ ಈ ವೀರ ಮರಣದ ನೆನಪು ಹಾಗೂ ಗೌರವಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ, ಅವನ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರು ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರು. 8ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಾಗಿರುವ ದಾಳಿಯನ್ನು 'ಊರಳಿವು' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಊರಳಿವು ಎಂಬ ಪದವನ್ನು, ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪಟ್ಟಣವನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡಲು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು ಭೀಕರ ದಾಳಿ ಎಂದು ಅರ್ಥೈಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಗೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಉಳಿದು ಬಂದಿರುವ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನವು, ಕಿತ್ತಯ್ಯನ ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ತ್ಯಾಗದ ನೆನಪನ್ನು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಜೀವಂತವಾಗಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

A 1,200-year-old battle, an invading army, and a common citizen who stood his ground —meet Kittaya, the hero behind Bengaluru's oldest recorded act of bravery.🔥

In Episode 4, Udaya Kumar PL narrates the epic story of Kittayya and the battle that saved Hebbal. 🌆

The Rattavadis (Rashtrakutas) launched a brutal attack on Hebbal (then known as Perboḷal). Their goal was clear: to completely burn down and destroy the entire town.

While others might have run, Kittaya stood his ground. He fought the invading army, and saved Hebbal from being wiped off, but paid the ultimate price with his life.

To honor his sacrifice, his family raised a Hero Stone. On this 8th-century inscription, the attack is described as Uralivu, a term that refers to a devastating attack on a village or town. Having survived for over a thousand years, preserving the memory of Kittaya's extraordinary courage 📜

Ancient Heroes of Bengaluru: Part 7 – Erayenga Vadaraga

The story of Erayenga Vadaraga is recorded on a hero stone in Kaikondrahalli, in Bengaluru South. Dating back to around 900 CE, this is a precious record of our region’s early history.

The record recounts the death of Erayenga Vadaraga during an attack on his village (referred to as uralivu), Kannili (present-day Kanneli). Erayenga was a servant of Ereyamma, the Gavunda (village head) of Kannili. To honor his father’s brave sacrifice, his son Marasingha Vadaraga erected this hero stone during the reign of Nagatara, who served as a formidable chieftain in Begur

An interesting detail carved next to the hero is a small bag with a strap, suggesting that this bag was used to carry betel leaves. In those days, soldiers’ wives would pack such a betel leaf basket to send their husbands off to war. It is wonderful to see how this ancient detail connects to the tradition of offering betel leaves to guests, which we still follow in our homes today.
