ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ವೀರರು: ಭಾಗ 11 - ಕೆಂಪಣ್ಣ

ಕೆಂಪಣ್ಣ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಒಬ್ಬ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ವೀರನಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈತನ ಸಾಹಸಗಾಥೆಯು 'ಗುಲಕಮಲೆ' ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿರುವ 14ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಒಂದು ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಲಕಮಲೆ ಗ್ರಾಮವನ್ನು 'ಗುಲಕಮರಿ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು, ಸಂತನ ಮಗನಾದ 'ಕೆಂಪಣ್ಣನು' ಗುಲಕಮಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ಒಂದು ಕಾಳಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೂ ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸದೇ, ವೀರಾವೇಷದಿಂದ ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಮಡಿದಾಗ, ಈತನ ಅಣ್ಣನಾದ ಕರಿಯಪ್ಪನು ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನೆಯನಾಯ್ಕ ಎಂಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಿತಿನೆಲೆ ಎಂಬ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಹೆಸರು ಸಹ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಶಾಸನ ಕಲ್ಲು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಸವೆತಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಈ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಊರಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾದ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಸಂಗತಿಯೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಕಾಳಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಡಿದ ವೀರನನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಗೌರವಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಆ ವೀರನ ಪತ್ನಿಯ ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ತ್ಯಾಗವನ್ನೂ ಸ್ಮರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಲಗೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂಬೆಹಣ್ಣು ಹಾಗೂ ಎಡಗೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಅಲಂಕಾರ ಭೂಷಿತಳಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿರುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನೂ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈಕೆ ಬೇರ್ಯಾರು ಅಲ್ಲ ಕೆಂಪಣ್ಣನ ಪತ್ನಿ. ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯ ಮರಣದ ನಂತರ ಈಕೆಯೂ ಸಹ ಸ್ವಇಚ್ಛೆಯಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನು ತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಕೈಗೊಂಡಳು. ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಸಮಾಜವೂ ಸಹ ಸಾವಿನ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಕೈಬಿಡುವಂತೆ ಆಕೆಯ ಮನವೊಲಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಆಕೆಯು ತನ್ನ ನಿರ್ಧಾರವನ್ನು ಬದಲಿಸದೇ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಸಾವನ್ನು ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಳು. ಇದೊಂದು ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥೈರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ಘಟನೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಈಕೆಯ ವೀರ ಮರಣವನ್ನೂ ಸ್ಮರಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ಶಿಲ್ಪವನ್ನು ಸಹ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಹಿಳೆಯ ಶಿಲ್ಪ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಕೆತ್ತಿರುವುದರಿಂದ ಈ ಸ್ಮಾರಕ ಕಲ್ಲನ್ನು ವೀರಮಾಸ್ತಿ ಕಲ್ಲು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Ancient Heroes of Bengaluru: Part 11- Kempanna

The story of Kempanna is recorded on a hero stone found in the village of Gulakamari (present-day Gulakamale), dating back to around the 14th century. It is a record of courage, sacrifice, and devotion from Bengaluru’s past.

This hero stone honors the bravery and sacrifice of Kempanna, the son of Santa. The record describes a fierce battle fought at Gulakamari. When the fight grew intense, Kempanna did not hold back. He charged bravely into the battle, refusing to back down, and ultimately gave his life on the battlefield. While the inscription identifies Santa as Kempanna’s father, the exact role of another person mentioned in the record, Kanneyanayaka, is not clearly known.

The stone does not only honor courage in war. Carved alongside the battle scene is the figure of a woman, a detail that identifies this as a Veeramasti stone. It honors Kempanna's wife, who chose to perform Sati after her husband's death. Walking toward the funeral pyre in that era took extraordinary mental strength and courage, and her act stands as a lasting symbol of her love and devotion.

Moved by this sacrifice and courage, Kempanna's elder brother, Kariyappa, had this hero stone erected at Gulakamari so their memory would never be forgotten.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ಥಳನಾಮಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಗಳು: ಭಾಗ 23 – ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿ 🕰️📜

ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಪೂರ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಒಂದು ಪರಿಚಿತ ಹಾಗೂ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಬಡಾವಣೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಸುಮಾರು 650 ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಪುರಾತನ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ತನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ಅಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾ.ಶ.1370ರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಒಂದು ಶಾಸನ ದಾಖಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಹಾಗೂ ಲಿಖಿತ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿಯನ್ನು 'ಗುಬಿ' ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ಈ ಶಾಸನವು ಕೇವಲ ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ದಾಖಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು, "ಗುಬಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (ಇಂದಿನ ದೊಡ್ಡಗುಬ್ಬಿ) ಬಂಗಾಚಾರಿ ಬಯಿರೋಜನ ಮಗ ಚೊಕ್ಕಾಬಕ್ತನು ನೋಂಪಿ ಎಂಬ ವ್ರತವನ್ನು (ಆಚರಣೆ) ಕೈಗೊಂಡು ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ತನಾದ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ, ಈತನ ಮಗನಾದ ಬಯಿರೋಜನು ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ವೀರ ಮರಣದ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಈ ಶಾಸನ ಕಲ್ಲನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಈ ಶಾಸನದ ಲಿಪಿಕಾರ ಕಾಳಶ್ರೀ ಎಂಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯೂ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಈ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಾಗಿರುವ "ನೋಂಪಿ" ಎಂಬುದು ಹಿಂದೂಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಜೈನರಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಒಂದು "ವ್ರತ" ಅಥವಾ ಆಚರಣೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಭಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವ ಹಾಗೂ ದೇವರ ಅನುಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವ ವಿಧಾನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ನೋಂಪಿ ಆಚರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಹೂವು-ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸುವ ಸರಳ ವಿಧಾನಗಳಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾ ವಿಧಾನ, ಉಪವಾಸ ಹಾಗೂ ಉಪವಾಸದ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಾವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದುವಂತಹ ಹಲವು ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ವಿಧಾನಗಳಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಚೊಕ್ಕಾಬಕ್ತನು ಯಾವ ನೋಂಪಿ ಆಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬುದು ತಿಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಶಾಸನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಸಂಗತಿಯೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ತನಾಗಿರುವ ಚೊಕ್ಕಾಬಕ್ತನು ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನೇ ತನ್ನ ಮಗನಿಗೂ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

Earliest Records of Locality Names in Bengaluru: Part 23 – Doddagubbi 🕰️📜

Doddagubbi in Bengaluru East is a familiar locality, but its history goes back more than 650 years. A 1370 CE stone inscription records the place simply as Gubi, providing the earliest known written record of the area’s name.

This inscription is more than just a record of a place name. The stone also tells a story from the region’s past. It commemorates the courageous death of Chokkabakta of Gubi, son of Bangachari Bayiroja. After his passing, Chokkabakta’s son, Bayiroja, set up this memorial stone to honour his father. Chokkabakta had named his son Bayiroja after his own father. The inscription was composed by Kalashri.

The record also offers an insight into the religious traditions of the time. It mentions that Chokkabakta had undertaken a Nompi, a ritual in the Hindu and Jaina traditions observed by a person with the intention of achieving a specific goal. However, the inscription does not make it clear what Chokkabakta hoped to achieve by undertaking the Nompi.

The images show 3D digital scans of this 1370 CE record, where the name Gubi is still clearly carved in stone, keeping the area's heritage alive.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ವೀರರು: ಭಾಗ 10 – ಪುಳಿಯಣ್ಣನ್

ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ಕೇವಲ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಕೂಡ !

ದೇವನಹಳ್ಳಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ರಾಜಾನುಕುಂಟೆ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾದೇನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಎಂಬ ಒಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ಶಾಸನಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ದಾಖಲಾಗಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾ.ಶ.1200ರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ ಒಂದು ಅಪರೂಪದ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು, ಇದು ಒಂದು ನಂಬಿಕಸ್ತ ನಾಯಿಯ ಅಪ್ರತಿಮ ಶೌರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ತ್ಯಾಗವನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ತಮಿಳು ಭಾಷೆ ಮತ್ತು ಲಿಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನವು, ಅರಯೂರಿನ ಪೆರ್ಗಡೆ (ಹೆಗ್ಗಡೆ) ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಸಾಮುಂಡಯ್ಯನ್ ಎಂಬುವವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ನಾಯಿ ‘ಪುಳಿಯಣ್ಣನ್’ನ ವೀರಗಾಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಾಮುಂಡಯ್ಯನ್ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಗನಂತೆಯೇ ಈ ನಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಒಂದು ಬೃಹತ್‌ ಗಾತ್ರದ ಕಾಡುಹಂದಿಯೊಂದು ಊರಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ಮಾಡಿತು. ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ‘ಪುಳಿಯಣ್ಣನ್’ ಎಂಬ ನಾಯಿಯು ಹಂದಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಧೈರ್ಯದಿಂದ ಹೋರಾಡಿ, ಅದನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ಹಾಕಿತು. ದುರಾದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್‌ ಈ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಯಿಯೂ ಕೂಡ ಗಾಯಗೊಂಡು, ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿತು. ಆಗ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ನಾಯಿಯ ವೀರ ಮರಣದ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರಿ ಸಂಗತಿಯೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಾಗಿರುವ ಹಂದಿಗೂ ಸಹ ‘ಕೇಸರಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಇಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.

ನಿಜವಾದ ನಾಯಕತ್ವ ಅಥವಾ ವೀರತ್ವ ಎಂಬುದು ಕೇವಲ ಹುದ್ದೆ ಅಥವಾ ಅಧಿಕಾರದಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಧಾರವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವದ ಹಂಗನ್ನು ತೊರೆದು ಇತರರನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ಧೈರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾನವರೇ ಆಗಿರಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳೇ ಮಾಡಿರಲಿ, ಅವರ ಧೈರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ತ್ಯಾಗದ ನೆನಪು ಚಿರಸ್ಥಾಯಿಯಾಗಿ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಪುಳಿಯಣ್ಣನ್ ಎಂಬ ನಾಯಿಯ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಸ್ಮಾರಕವೇ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲುಗಳು ರಾಜ ಪರಿವಾರ, ಯೋಧರು ಹಾಗೂ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ವೀರರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತವಾಗಿರದೇ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಸಲ್ಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು ಹಾಗೂ ಅನಾದಿ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಮಾನವ - ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಒಂದು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಸಂಬಂಧವಿತ್ತೆಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಒಂದು ಜ್ವಲಂತ ನಿದರ್ಶನವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಒಂದು ನಿಯತ್ತಿನ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಸಾದೇನಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಪುಲಿಯಣ್ಣನ್‌ ನಾಯಿಯ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಈ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಲಾರದು. ಇಂತಹ ಒಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಪರೂಪದ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೂ ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಇದನ್ನು 3ಡಿ ಸ್ಕ್ಯಾನಿಂಗ್‌ ಮಾಡಿ, ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್‌ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಾದೇನಹಳ್ಳಿ ವೀರಗಲ್ಲು ಶಾಸನದ 3ಡಿ ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್‌ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಪುಳಿಯಣ್ಣನ್’ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಕೆತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೀವು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಬಹುದು.

Ancient Heroes of Bengaluru: Part 10 – Puliyannan

Not all heroes were human.

Hidden in the village of Sadenahalli, near Rajanukunte in Devanahalli Taluk, is a remarkable hero stone dating back to around 1200 CE. It commemorates the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of a loyal dog.

The inscription, written in Tamil, tells the story of Puliyannan, the beloved dog of Samundayan, the Perkadi (Perggade), or chieftain, of Arayur (place unknown). The inscription records that Puliyannan was loved by Samundayan like a son. When a fierce wild boar (mentioned in the record as Kesari) attacked, Puliyannan bravely confronted it. Although it succeeded in killing the wild boar, it was fatally wounded in the fight and sacrificed its own life.

This hero stone preserves the memory of Puliyannan's loyalty, courage, and sacrifice. It reminds us that true heroism is not defined by rank or power, but by the courage to protect others, even at the cost of one's own life.

Hero stones such as this show that bravery was not remembered only in kings and warriors. Loyalty and sacrifice were equally honoured, even when shown by an animal. More than nine centuries later, this remarkable stone continues to tell the story of a faithful companion whose courage has never been forgotten.
