The Devadasi system is a practice where adolescent girls from lower caste communities are dedicated to Goddesses, after which they are expected to perform sexual favours to men from the upper caste societies. The system finds its roots in culture and tradition, where earlier, Devadasis were performing artists, displaying their music and dance skills exclusively in temples as a form of worship.
At present, the system continues to be institutionalized exploitation of young girls and women, convincing them that performing sexual duties is their role in society. Generations of women follow the rules of social heredity in this oppressive practice, highlighting the regressive aspects of India’s caste system which expects members of the ’lower’ section to ‘serve’ the ‘upper’ section.
The result of this practice is that women and girls are denied their sexual rights. They are discriminated against and face severe verbal and sexual harassment. Young girls in the system barely get to see the light of education; their potential is not harnessed and empowerment remains a far-fetched dream.
Children Empowerment for GOOD (Getting Out Of Devadasi System) and Preventing further Dedications is a project instituted by Terre des Hommes Netherlands in 2019 to address the Devadasi issue in a holistic manner in Northern Karnataka. It is a first of its kind comprehensive program using the approaches of: Prevention, Provision, Promotion (Advocacy & Lobbying), Prosecution.
Project GOOD is a 3-year program (2019-2021) aiming to empower at least 2500 adolescent girls to fight against the issue of Devadasi dedication using the Child Participation approach.
Currently, the project identified 929 exploited girls across the five districts through its network of Devadasi women. Due to the formation of Self-help groups, Children who never spoke before have begun to voice their opposition to the Devadasi system. Children have stopped child marriages and have enrolled drop out children back in school.
And thus, community members and law enforcement agencies are now more sensitive to the issue and have offered resources and support for project activities.
