I stood, and still stand, in support of this movement because the demand for justice is absolutely valid. But after watching some of the viral reels from the protests, I couldn’t help but feel conflicted.
This movement was born out of pain, loss, and the hope that no family should ever have to endure such a tragedy again. It was never just another event—it is a reminder of lives that were cut short and dreams that will never be fulfilled.
When parts of a protest begin to look like a concert, a picnic, or an opportunity for viral content, the message risks getting overshadowed. It may not be everyone’s intention, but that’s how it can be perceived.
Before recording the next reel, take a moment to think about the parents who lost their children. Their grief hasn’t ended. While thousands of students gather, they are left wondering what their own child would have been doing today if they were still alive. That thought alone is heartbreaking.
Let’s keep this movement focused on what truly matters—justice, accountability, and respect for those whose lives were lost. The strongest protests are remembered not for how loud they were, but for how deeply they moved a nation.
